Morgan Brax had been inside the dusty corridors the Citadel library for the past two hours, returning with an armful of books and copies of a few old manuscript scrolls. She hummed a jaunty tune as she headed for her chambers. But as she crossed the courtyard she looked around to see if there was anyone particularly interesting passing by, or perhaps one of her particular friends.

Sara Banefort, the only truly gifted female student of the original group, is reading something over in a corner, surrounded by young adepts doing other random activities and pretending to not stare at her. Since Morgan's offensive the year prior, the Citadel has undergone some fundamental changes, albeit grudgingly. Archmaester Harlan continues to serve as the leader of the Citadel but most of the others are long gone. Lorn hasn't been seen in 13 months.

Morgan strolled over to Sara, taking little notice of the adepts beyond a vague smile in their direction. "Hello," she said brightly to her friend. "What are you reading? I've just booked out a few histories."

"Math," she said. "Horribly dull but you know how the professors are about trigonometry." She smiled. "What chain are you working on now?"

"I'm dividing my time between history, ravenry and the study of manuscripts. History's the copper link and ravenry's iron. Manuscripts is..." She frowned. "I can't remember. but I think history is my best chance for my first link."

"Well good luck. Mine is in chemistry and my exam is in eight days. Crammmm time," she drawled out.

"Oh no! Wow, you're going through this really fast," Morgan said, awed. "I wish I had your confidence. I'll buy you a drink afterwards, but I think you'll pass first time round."
She clutched her books more securely. "Don't the young men bother you when you're studying?"

"Men are like mosquitoes without teeth. Once you ignore the buzzing, it is easier than having to keep swatting them," she said. "You're up soon too right?"

"Um...I hope so, if my tutor thinks I'm ready. Sometimes I feel sick thinking about it, but this is why we're here. I'm going to confirm with him today if he thinks I should definitely go for it."

Sara smiled. "You'll be fine. You're smarter than I am; I just think this class is what I was born to study is all." She clapped her shoulder. "Chin up!"

Morgan smiled feebly. "I just want to be good enough, after all this time and everything I suffered to get here. I'll feel such a fool if I fail my first attempt."
She felt a pang as she thought of Quentyn and the help he'd given her. She still missed him when her mind was not occupied by her studies.
"If the gods are good, we'll both be able to celebrate our first links soon. Perhaps we'll surprise them all." This time her smile was genuine. "I'd love to show the doubters that we women are as capable as any of the men."

"Except that damn Lyam," she said with a touch of annoyance. "The man has an eidetic memory for useless knowledge." She closes her book. "But hopefully the first chains come for us both. It's what I'll do after here that I need to think on."

"Yes." Morgan let silence fall for a moment, because it was a problem that occupied her mind too. "Do you think about it often? Do you want to wear the full maester's chain?"

"Not really," she admitted freely. "Even though we're here don't think for a minute any lord is going to want a female maester. Well, they might," she said. "But their ladies sure as hell won't. I might see if any of the major nobles could use an ambassador or something."
