Kelsey shows up and takes a seat. "Ready to tell the truth now?"

Morgan flinched. "I'll tell you what you need to know," she said miserably. "The thing is, it's a troublesome story and, well, I must ask for your absolute confidence, princess. It concerns several rather delicate matters."

Kelsey doesn't respond. She does make a "hurry up" motion.

She had thought long and hard about it and in the end she decided to cut to the chase. The words poured out of her. "I went to Oldtown," she said. "I wanted to study at the Citadel. You know how I always want to read every book in the world. The Citadel has the best library in the known world. So I...disguised myself and got accepted as a novice. And then...then I heard Lady Hightower was going to allow women in the Citadel anyway. So I went to her. But then the maesters found out where I was and arrested me." She paused. "There is a secret organisation in the Citadel, princess. They claim to manipulate us all."

Kelsey sits and taps her fingers through the story. "Cultist maesters?" She frowns. "What do you take me for?"

Morgan frowned. "I took you for a woman who knows how dangerous the world is, princess. And it seems it is more dangerous than we could have imagined. See, the maesters control the rookeries in every castle, they send a lord's letters and receive them for him. In many cases, the maester may even write his lord's letters and read his correspondence to him. if the lord has weak eyes or his abilities are limited, he won't know if the maester is lying to him. Additionally, they are men of learning, skilled in many different arts from stewardship to strategy, healing and smithing. And it's said some study the black arts, though that might just be a children's tale."
She paused to let it all sink in.
"But one thing I do know, princess. The Citadel dislikes change, especially the members of this little cult. They will fight tooth and claw to hoard their knowledge and hide it away from the rest of us. They already oppose Lady Hightower's plan to have women admitted to the Citadel. I'm proof of that. They told vile lies about me and ordered me flogged and confined. If it wasn't for the assistance of a friend among the novices, I might still be imprisoned in Oldtown."

That finally gets her attention. "Flogged? How vile." She looks at her. "What do you intend on, then? Is lady Hightower aware?"

"She's not, as far as I know. There was no time to speak to her, because we had to get away. Father and I plan to find allies to see the Citadel purged of this evil. Olyvar Manderly - my rescuer - plans to seek help from the Starks. And there is something else. I am hoping I might be able to search the castle library for information to help us. We need to know as much as possible about the Citadel. They have guarded their secrets closely, but there's a possibility I've found something useful, but I need more information before I can pursue it. We've a good library at home, but it can't compare with the library here, of course."
She stopped, looking the princess in the eye.
"They hurt me, princess, and made false accusations against me. I regret my actions now, of course, but I acted in the pursuit of knowledge. They acted with the aim of concealing knowledge from the world and manipulating us to serve their own ends. They treated me cruelly, they might treat Lady Hightower's...wards cruelly too. I cannot stand by while these men remain in power."

Kelsey shrugs. "Then we will help how we can. The library is free for your use," she said. "I will send a letter to Lady Arania immediately."

"Thank you. May I suggest keeping a close eye on your own master here? He might be part of the cult, though I would hoped not, for all our sakes."
She thought a moment.
"I hoped you might be able to advise me regarding other allies."

"If Maesters Reynald is a cultist then he could have harmed us all decades ago," Kelsey scoffed. "If you want people upset at the Citadel I'm sure there is no lack of disgruntled former students in Lannisport."

"Truly? Do they congregate there?" Morgan looked interested at that. "But that carries a risk too, I think. It might be hard to prove my case if I seek only the testimony of men who were evicted from the Citadel for misconduct or who failed in their studies. I need allies among the chained maesters. But that will be especially hard to determine. I will have to give that more thought, princess. I suppose Maester Reynald has not spoken of me shortly before I arrived here?"

Kelsey shrugged. "I really have no experience at this, Morgan, but he didn't say anything before you arrived."

"That might be a good sign, then. I hope I am not asking too much of you, princess. But could I perhaps arrange a meeting with Maester Reynald? I could ask him for advice on a mundane matter and see what he says to me in a private setting." She gave the princess a regretful look. "I really don't want to involve you more than I must. You've been good to me, and you'll be safer if you don't know too much. So I will ask you simply to consider who else I might approach for assistance in this matter and seek to avoid putting you in an awkward position."

"Lord Russ is our master of Whispers," she said. "Perhaps he knows something."
