When Jaymes was done, Quentyn turned to Killion. "Sounds to me as though they don't have any interest in defeating the Tyrells at all. 'You don't get to keep anything, and maybe we can find some fourth cousin who's technically a Lannister for you.'" He shrugged. "Of course, the king likely has more sense than this green boy. We should just catch up with him and negotiate directly."

"I mean, I guess you are welcome to the Stepstones," said Jaymes, a corner of his mouth twitching, seemingly unfazed by the slight by this.. whoever it was, he didn't actually know. Perhaps the Ironborn was unaware that Prince Benjen had just married a fourth cousin to King Brynden, technically a Lannister, and that the king himself was only five-and-ten. "By all means, go ahead and do so, but don't be too surprised if he is reluctant to offer you his lands as freely as Prince Benjen here, seeing as he has a strong fleet and a perfectly capable commander at his command."

Quentyn did not, in fact, have any idea of the king's youth. He'd likely seen the boy at the wedding and not realized who he was.
"He has a fleet of war galleys full of Reachmen." He raised one finger. "First, they won't be sailing up the Mander to take Highgarden for you. You need our longships for that." He raised a second finger. "Second, you don't use a Reachman to kill a Reachman. They've got friends, family, allies on both sides of the lines. Better for us to take care of it."

"You make a convincing case," said Jaymes after considering that for a moment, even though Reachmen killing Reachmen didn't bother him in the slightest. "Frankly, I am surprised you even care so much about the lands, but I have to stay adamant about those. I thought you would be more interested in the spoils, which would be quite impressive. If you think that might suffice, the king has a widowed aunt," he offered, knowing for a fact that he'd go down in the Lannister history as the lord who managed to piss off the most relatives with shitty marriage alliances.

"I think it goes without saying that any plunder, family heirlooms, and salt wives taken will not be returned." Killion states simply. "We will take the Shield Isles and set the Mander aflame. It will be awfully difficult for the Tyrells to march to war with their homes burning at their backs."
"As for returning any lands taken, that is something I am sure can be negotiated when the war ends. I will not pay the iron price only to meekly hand my prize back, but will also not turn my nose up at fair recompense for their return. As they say, possession is nine tenths of the law."

"Well, then it seems we are at an impasse," said Jaymes, looking to the Starks and the Greyjoys in turn. He had no intention of giving away Shield Islands, and the Ironborn as allies could only be trusted as far as they could be thrown, everyone knew that. "I will not offer you any lands, just the spoils. The offer is on the table, you can do with it what you will."

Quentyn considered it for a moment.
"All right." He finally answered. "No. We regret that the Lannisters have chosen to reject our offer of friendship. Shut the door on your way out, Jaymes."

Terrence unrolls a map. "King Bryce has allied with a powerful backer," he said. "Volantis and Tyrosh are both supporting his claims as sovereign of southern Westeros." He points to a few of the Stepstone islands. "Lord Entel Moray and his Tyroshi allies were both badly beaten this two months' past by a rogue mercenary named Uhtred Farwynd, Ironborn only by name, Braaosi by allegiance." He makes a few marks on the map. "If Lord Jaymes says that Lord Redwyne is an ally to King Brynden still, then they are no threat to you. Raze and claim Starfall as a port for your own, and then we can meet for a joint sortie to take the whole of the Stepstones, Ferrous Keep...and if it is gold you want, and land, and plunder, well," he moves his finger a bit east, "Why don't we just tke Tyrosh, and shut off a massive source of support for both King Rycherd and Bryce Dayne's little war?"

Jaymes clenched his fists at his sides, clearly angered by the Ironborn's insolence and informality. "You would do well to remember your place, Ironlander," he said through his teeth.

"Give my best to your boy king and Lord Redwyne then." he replied to Jaymes, with a dangerous glint in his eye. "We know our place well. We are not the ones whose ineptitude just cost half out kingdom."
He turns back to King Terrence with notably more respect.
"My father has summoned all Ironborn back to Pyke on pain of death. If Farwynd is not among them, I will drown him myself."
"The Shield Isles will fall first so the Mander is opened up to our longships. The rest of the fleet will then continue on to Starfall, though I will not have Redwyne at my back." he warned. "If he is not an ally to the Iron Islands due to Lord Jayme's rejection of our friendship, the Arbor Fleet will be swept away."

"You will not refer to my son in law as a boy king in my hearing, not in my own kingdom, Prince Killion," Terrence said evenly. "I know your father taught you better manners than that." There is a touch of steel behind the words, but just the faintest touch, honed by decades of practicing diplomacy. "If Lord Jaymes says there is an alliance with the Arbor then it is so."

"Gentlemen, please," Benjen spoke up in a calm voice, trying to cool the heads of everyone involved. "We need not discuss the potential ownership of the Shields or the Arbor or the Stepstones right now. First we need to take them back. First we need to win. If we win this we can discuss the spoils." He studied the men present with a measure gaze.

Quentyn held a hand up. "Last I had heard, Redwyne had not moved from port. He may say he is an ally, but at the moment, he is a bystander." He finished his drink, and set the cup down on the desk. "If he cares to move from port, we can worry about the details then."

"My mistake." Killion replied, with a smile that did not reach his eyes. "But if there is to be no friendship between the Iron Islands and the West, then Lord Redwyne is no ally of mine and his fleet an obstacle."

"Prince Killion," Benjen spoke up, turning to the Greyjoy. "The two of us are allied, as am I to the Lannisters. It would benefit all of us were you to accept the allegiance of the Redwynes. I doubt you wish to fight more enemies than you need to."
