Benjen jumped a little, then turned to his wife and managed a weak smile. "Of course... thank you, Joanna. I..." He turned to the man. "You will be shown to some quarters and be allowed to bathe and be fed."
He turned back to Joanna. "I have to go now, to kill all of these bastards."

"Then go kill these bastards," Joanna agreed, looking into his eyes for a while before pulling him in for a sweet goodbye kiss.

Benjen kissed Joanna back heatedly, his blood obviously hot now with anger at 'those bastards'. "I will be back soon, my love." He kisses is fingers and places them to her lip, then turns and leaves.

Some days after a raven arrives bearing a letter with two seals, one of the Faith and another with sigil of Joanna's maiden House, the Lannisters of Lannisport. Enclosed is a fat letter, the first portion taken up by the following:
My princess Joanna Stark,
Seven blessings be upon you and your house as your husband and those of his family march south against the common foes of both Lion and Wolf. With the consent and support of your brother, Lord Jaymes, I have written to you begging both aid and permission. Below you will find a copy of my seventy-seven theses concerning reform with the Faith of the Seven. Though your husband and most of his family bear no allegiance to the Seven, their political interests are aligned with House Lannister's and my own in divesting the High Septon of his authority to declare anyone of his liking the Lord of these Seven Kingdoms. Both Westerland and Northern strength has been sapped by the most recent declaration, and has plunged both of our Kingdoms into war. Other reforms aligning the Faith with both scripture and political stability are also outlined below. Your brother has recommended to me your aid in disseminating good will and authority with regard to these reforms amongst the Lord's of the West and the Riverlands. Though I speak with the King's voice, and am both protected and funded by your house, the addition of your hand in writing and communicating these desires would be of much aid. I also request permission and escort to Eddard's Rest at your earliest convenience, acknowledging the difficulty in wartime, to discuss these matters in person and request audience with your good-father.
Septon Martyn of House Westerling

Upon seeing the Faith seal, Joanna half thought it to be another death threat, had it not been for the letter's weight and.. the other seal. She raised an eyebrow at this Septon Martyn's bold claim about talking in King Brynden's voice, but then she figured that must not have been too difficult to achieve. Having skimmed through the first page of his theses, she tossed them aside as one would spam mail. Perhaps she would read them later, most likely not.
Her reply was short and to the point due to her foul mood as of late.
Septon Martyn,
If my brother insist, you must of course visit. As for escort, you may take guards from Lannisport, if you are as protected and funded by my house as you say you are. Eddard's Rest will know of your arrival.
Signed, Princess Joanna of House Stark

The queen sends word one day that she would like to speak to her daughter in law, if she is not too busy with work.

Seeing as this request was posted in her chambers, Joanna invited the queen over for a brunch, having had the solar aired beforehand, and a servant bring in fresh flowers. Although she'd secretly been on a bender for about a week, the princess now looked as sweet and sharp as ever, dressed in a dress of green and gold. It was spring outside, after all. Her hair was down in a long braid with a few small white flowers in it. She'd idly put them there as she'd been waiting for the queen.

Queen Janelle enters quietly. She is a slight woman in her early forties, soft spoken and seldom heard. "I hope Eddard's Rest is to your liking," she starts. "I am sure it is less bustling than Lannisport. I was wondering if you'd like to sop today; I invited some Lysene slik merchants and they finally have arrived."

Joanna began to understand why the woman was so seldom heard. She curtsied and offered her a kind smile. "It is quite nice, for a change," she said, although the city was quite hideous in its repairs. "How wonderful. Lysene silk is marvellous for the summer. Please, have a seat and help yourself to the food," she said, motioning at the set table, and sat down herself.

The queen had a small amount of finger foods and sparkling wine. "I wanted to check up on you; I heard rumors you have been...under the weather of late." she sippd her drink. "Me too. Thee is no feeling like losing a child." She is placid. "My sons are off o war, my daughtes scattered, and you had no chance to get to know your husband before he amrched off to war. Your brother is marching off too, leaving us behind to pick up the pieces they leave scattered in their wake." Another bite. "What ails you, Joanna?"

Joanna gave her a sympathetic nod and even rested a hand on the queen's briefly. "I am sorry. I do regret there has to be a war, but perhaps things will have a way of playing out. It is rare, but it can happen. I will do my best to aid them in their endeavours."
She waved a hand at her question, lightening up a bit. "It was nothing, a hint of a cold if anything at all. I tend to get them every spring. It is quite odd, is it not? Nothing throughout the entire winter, but as soon as the softer breeze hits.. What of you? Are you unwell, Your Grace?"

"Better every day," she said. "My strength returns with the leaves. I wasn't born a Stark either; I have no love for their snow and ice and winter. It is hard to be married to a Stark," she freely admits. "They have their own way. But they are also loyal and brave to a fault." She looks outside, to the melting snow. "Other than my crown, what do you want, Joanna? I have trouble answering the question even for myself." She asks the first part in a slight teasing matter.

Joanna briefly considered if 'more crowns' would have been an inappropriate answer, but her smile slowly faded when she realized she had no real answer to her question. That had been a little rude of the queen, and to think she'd gone out of her way to be nice to her. "What everyone wants, I suppose. Peace and prosperity to our lands," she offered in a light tone, the corner of her mouth twitching a little.

"Oh, no, no," she said. "Every queen wants that. I am boring; I like sewing and singing and reading. And wine," she admits. "What do you want for yourself? I rather like you, and I was hoping to help you. You're not half so boring as most of the people here."
