"Indeed. We shall help with the hunt," he says. "the bastard cannot make it to the Frozen lands."

"Do you know of a place called the Ice River?" he asked. "I have reason to believe that is where he heads."

"Aye, it's a dangerous place, inhabited by cannibals famed for their brutality," the First Ranger says. "we avoid it whenever possible." As they march north, night falls and greenish lights flare up in the sky.

"Then hopefully we can catch him before he reaches his prize." Oriax remarked, though knew that was moot at this point.

"Hopefully. I wonder what he seeks," the man says. "Queen Savinia is unlikely to let him get so far, anyway. Even we seldom make it more than a day's ride past the Wall, now."

"I cannot speak the mind of a madman." Oriax replied. "I only know he is a cunning survivor."

"Well, he is a stranger up there. Strangers don't last long." The knights camp for the night. "But, where are you from, my friend?"

"Far to the East." he replied, making camp with the rest.

"Oh come now. I've made it to Slaver's Bay. I know of Asshai by the Shadow," he said. "I wasn't born on the Wall. Tell us a tale. A song only dead men should sing," he says. The brothers gather around.

"Very well." Oriax relented, taking a seat by the fire, the flames reflected in his black eyes. "But I expect a tale of the lands North of the Wall in exchange."
He wove a tale then, a ghost story that chilled the blood, detailing horrors in the Shadow that sounded like the dreams of a madman: demons that inhabited the waste and the men who fornicated with then, the Corpse City of Stygai where the Elder Gods were said to slumber, and narratives of shadowbinders infamous even by the high standards of their kin. As he told the tale, theatricality was added by twisting the flames into unnatural shapes and colors: a masked man in the flames one moment and a demon the next. It was a simple parlor trick for his kind, but one that typically served to impress.

The men are impressed, but have seen too much to be as scared as he is used to. In return, a balding man offers a tale of the legendary cannibal Borus the Great Bear, and his quest to eat a man from every tribe beyond the wall, giants included. His tale takes him far and wide, north and south, to Winterfell and the Dreadfort, until at last he easts the flesh of an Other. "And now," he finishes, "he remains an Other, raising the dead to do his bidding riding a great spider into battle with the remnants of his vanished kind."

"A fine tale." Oriax allowed, listening intently, treating it as more historical account than fictitious legend. "I know a man with a similar appetite." he added, thinking of Crowl.

"You must mean that Skaag" the men said. "He eats men alive and he's the gods-damned prince's finest warrior!"

"Besides Lord Kalvin, of course." Oriax replied, with a thin smile beneath his mask, as if remembering the punchline of a joke.

"Well, that one is a whole different story," they said. "But you know what we mean." Nyles chuckles.
"Does he ever." The green lights continue making their random shapes.
