Oriax and company passed north through the ashen field Snow had set alight as he fled, following the Kingsroad towards Moat Cailin.
One evening, they set up camp north of the Twins, on the border where the verdant Riverlands begin to turn marshy as they neared the swamp of the Neck. Oriax set the sellswords to guard and hand out rations to the two dozen prisoners from the dungeons that had been provided. Sitting before a small fire, he ordered Malix to bring him the weakest of the Night's Watch recruits, the one that would be missed least.

There's only so many people in the party to start with, but Malix finds a small, particularly sarcastic runt to deal with.

As Malix brought the bound specimen before him, Oriax opened the ivory vessel and collected a small sample of the red powder within on the point of his dagger.
"Snort this." he commanded, voice echoing from his weirwood mask in a chill tone that promised making it to the Wall would be the least of his worries if he did not.

The man snorts the powder. He sighs in contentment after a few seconds. Nothing else visibly happens.

Oriax removed quill, ink pot, and vellum from his bag-scrawling "subject 1" in Asshaii script at the top along with the amount of powder and manner in which it was administered.
"Describe to me what you are feeling, if anything." he instructed, watching the man closely. Bolton had mistakenly assumed his own administration of the substance a failure. He would not repeat the error.

"I feel...really good," the man said. "Really good. Like I can fly. Dragons can fly. I feel like a dragon. Not a cardinal, a dragon. But red, like a cardinal."

The sorcerer quickly noted the erratic behavior and delusions on his parchment, black eyes fixed on the test subject for changes.

An hour passes and nothing happens. If Oriax heard the word dragon once more though he will probably explode in rage.

"Will he stop saying dragon?" Amelia hissed to herself as she walked back and forth between two trees.

He took detailed notes and continued to observe, willing to watch all night if necessary. At one point he drew his dagger and cut the man's palm to check the color.

Nyles gets bored at one point. "Aren't we chasing someone?"

"If you wish to traverse the swamps of the neck in the dark, be my guest." Oriax replied coldly, annoyed at having his experiment interrupted. "Do you truly care, Nyles?" "Will he stop saying dragon?" Amelia hissed to herself as she walked back and forth between two trees. "Speaking of dragons, what do you know of the man Vhagus Blackfyre," he asked Amelia, hoping conversation would calm the Westetosi. They were a people as a whole that seemed to lack patience and fear silence.

"He is an evil man," Amelia said, looking over at Oriax. "When I met him he slew several Khals, as well as his own mother. His dragon is... gigantic and the khalasar he lead was two hundred thousand strong."
She bit her lip. "He offered me to be his Queen."

"If you still think there is such a thing as good and evil in this world, then I have taught you nothing." Oriax replied, with utter disdain. "I asked not of your infantile moral view on his actions, nor his dragon, nor the size of his khalasar, nor his questionable taste in women. I asked of the man."

Amelia's expression became angry as she rounded on Oriax. "I have had enough of you, Oriax. Your arrogant, self-absorbed attitude and your belief that you are the greatest being that walks this earth. You are the same sort as Vhagus Blackfyre. Look in the mirror and you will see what he is."
