Benjen opens the door to his rooms and looks up slightly in shock, having heard that Nick would be leaving. "You're... not here to kill me, are you?" He asked, not truly believing that.

"Would I walk casually through everyone to do that?" he asked sarcastically. "You have a family," he said. "The North relies on you. My remaining siblings rely on you." He looks about for whoever else is present. "But I do not," he said. "I've asked for nothing from you. Are we brothers, Ben?" he said.

Benjen studied Nick for a long moment, before nodding. "Of course you are, Nicholas. You're as much a Stark as any of us, even if you don't have the name."

Nick is silent a moment. "I think you lied to me," he said. He leaned against the wall. "But your friend is right. I cannot condemn thousands to die for this. But Amelia is wrong about something, Ben. What does she do whenever provoked?"

Benjen winced a little, taking a deep breath. "I did... I'm sorry. It was to protect a friend." He closed his eyes and went to his calm place, picturing a face...
"She lashes out at it? Burns it?" He finally answered.

"Attacks it. Digs for the truth of it," he said. "Exactly what this Oriax would want. He needs her, or something like her. If he is half as strong as you're all saying, no number of men could keep her safe. And that's even if we're all really on the same side." He shakes his head. "Have we ever all been on the same side?"

Benjen's eyes narrowed. "You've lost me a bit there. Do you think she's going to walk into some sort of trap if she goes north." He stretched his left arm until the dull pain in his shoulder went away. A lingering present from Jonarth. "I don't think we have but we don't have a choice anymore."

"Yes, Ben," he said, patiently. "I believe she is going to walk into a giant trap engineered specifically for her. It's what I would do. Isolate and slaughter anyone with magical talent, REAL magical talent, and then start the real plan." He shakes his head. "And she'd never listen to me telling her not to go. Be a leader, Ben. Order it. Uniformed black brothers supposedly attacked her. Doesn't it seem like a sorcerer like Oriax might want them to...wear a fucking disguise?"

"It's going to be hard to convince her not to go," Benjen responded, scratching his head. "She has a point - we need to know what is up there. But... someone else needs to go. You're right." He paced about for a moment. "As for those Black Brothers... gods know. She said one of them wore a seven pointed star."

"You don't have to convince her...you're the prince of the north. BE the prince of the North. She is sworn to obey you even if she hates it. Anyone you send will come back to face us again if she's right. He must have followers in other places. Let's focus on them instead."

"If we don't know what is happening there then we don't have a hope in convincing anyone else that there is a threat," Benjen muttered. "The Night's Watch doesn't seem to be offering much help either. I know Amelia is trying to find out where this powder is made but it could be anywhere."

"The Ironborn are convinced of the threat," Nick said. "Convincing Lord Stark and the lovely ladies of the Goldlands that the enemy of their enemy is also their enemy could be a tougher task than anything."

"I can speak with Joanna," Benjen suggested. "We've had our disagreements but I think she will trust my word. Kalvin... Kalvin will listen. But we need everyone, Nick."
