im going to be sad for a while, major book spoiler too Thing is, Shireen is back on Dragonstone Castle Black with Selyse and Melisandre for the Northern campaign, so clearly, this all happens much later after much more character development on Stannis' part. I think D&D either misinterpreted what GRRM said, or just didn't fucking care about little things like context and characterizaion.

Thematically it's as GRRM as you can get and it'd only make sense for Stannis to do it to somehow aid him in winning the war. Clearly based off Agamemnon and Iphigenia. Hopefully he's killed by his own wife as well right as he achieves victory.

I just would have liked to have seen it in a more realistic manner to Stannis's character at THAT point. I can totally see him doing it when Dany shows up with dragons or if he loses the upcoming battle so hard, he just snaps.

Where does this quote come from? I can't stop thinking about the speech Stannis makes to Davos about ensuring that Shireen is named his heir if he dies. So if the sacrifice is canon to future books, it makes me wonder about the earlier speech.

So if the sacrifice is canon to future books, it makes me wonder about the earlier speech. You can find it in the about the episode bit I think. And yeah, my concern is that it is a bit... weird with what has come before. But then Stannis is a ruthless man. People forget he's a dick who will do anything to become king. He killed his brother and was willing to burn Gendry.

I don;'t think Stannis knew what was going to happen to Renly. I think it was Mel's way of showing her power. But to be honest, Renly was a traitor to Stannis, if he'd died in battle or by beheading, it would not be a problem for most people.
I am not sure about Gendry/Edric, I have always had doubts about whether Stannis would go through with it. More so with Edric since he knew the kid whereas Gendry was a stranger to him. But it just doesn't gel with me that he'd kill his own daughter.
