Thematically it's as GRRM as you can get and it'd only make sense for Stannis to do it to somehow aid him in winning the war. Clearly based off Agamemnon and Iphigenia. Hopefully he's killed by his own wife as well right as he achieves victory. Pfff, theme's. From the mouth of Benioff himself, "Theme's are for 8th grade book reports." asoiafuniversity.tumblr.com/post/46651630734/elementary-thematic-planning-my-dear-mr-benioffI thought Korben was telling a funny joke... and then to my horror, I discovered he was not.

[Ok I came in here ready to be very very angry about how the show ruined Stannis' character and made him different from book Stannis in unacceptable ways but now I am shocked it's book canon Wonder how that happens when Shireen is at Castle Black in the books? Well damn, Stannis was my favorite Iron Throne contender. Shireen Finally got a chance to watch the whole episode tonight. Drogon! Which my autocorrect wanted to make Dragon! For once my Macbook does not disgrace itself. I think Mel will persuade Selyse to do it in the books. It literally makes no sense for Stannis to do it, and as you say, they are far apart in the books. I am clinging to that for dear life but now I've realised that in the show right now all I care about is that Sansa escapes Ramsay.

Or Stannis will lose the battle, retreat back to the wall, and do it out of desperation.

Well it's supposed to show that Stannis would do anything to become king. That has always been evident, I think. His whole spiel of being the rightful king bla bla, that's bullshit. I don't think it's character assassination at all. The lead up to the burning in the show was a little... meh and I definitely think that could've gone smoother, but this is a very Stannis thing to do. He's burned people and killed people before to get what he wants. He killed his brother. Doesn't mean he feels good about doing these things, but that's why he sent Davos away. Davos is his conscience. Without it he can do these things.

does stannis really believe in the red god though? from what i remember in Davos' POV we get the sense he doesnt or maybe its just from my interpretation of him in the books he doesn't really believe in the sacrifices.
im alright with what he did in the show and by now ive learned that book and show are way seperate creatures and i shouldnt expect characters to act the way they do in the books. (because ill get even angrier at the stupidity that is the dorne plot in the show)

I'm not sure what his belief on the actual Red God is, but it the evidence for him is there that whenever Melisandre has done some magic shit it has worked. I mean heck, he seems to believe that Blakwater was a mess cause Mel wasn't there.
