"If this is indeed the Volantene, then I commend them for writing their letters so that we'd understand. It would be most considerate of them," she said with a wry smile, guessing that the Volantene had learned of her part in cancelling the betrothal. To send an assassin after her, however.. was flattering. "You have my thanks for delivering this. Use more resources if you must. Whoever sent him, has certainly piqued my interest and I'd like to know. Was there anything else?"

"Please be careful. my lady. If it is the Volantene, their resources are limitless. Also...the Iron Fleet is mobilizing. Like never before. King euric gas built an enormous fleet. Big enough to crush Lannisport, if they chose. I'm sure Lord Jaymes will want to know.""

She was fairly certain that nothing was limitless, but nodded thankfully nevertheless. "I am grateful for the warning. I will of course let him know," she said, and sighed. Her poor brother would surely get his first grey hair before hitting 20, she thought sadly.

He is permitted audience after a few brief moments. "Your Grace," Joanna greeted him with a small curtsy. "What brings you here, if I may ask?"

King Terrence takes a seat with a bit of a grimace, favoring his right knee. "I hope your last few days have been pleasant, Joanna," he said. "I know that it can be a big adjustment, marriage and moving and all that. I just wanted to...get to know you a bit better. I've heard many things from many different people," he smiles. "Almost universally good, I assure you. And I wouldn't trust anything I heard about someone if it was ALL good."

Joanna had a servant offer the king some wine. "It has been quite nice, considering the circumstances," she said, returning his smile. Having noted his grimace, she glanced at his knee. "Are you unwell, Your Grace?"

"When you're old," he said, "You're always unwell. It is fortunate you have many many years before age will take a single bit of your beauty away," he accepts the wine gratefully. "I was wondering if you had any idea in how you feel your skills may best serve the realm. It...is difficult, I am sure, moving kingdoms, old allegiances, new allegiances, deciding who to trust and who not to. I thought perhaps you might appreciate a position, at the court. I am told you are rather too clever to leave unoccupied," he said with a smile.

"Now, who might have told you that, I wonder?" she inquired, a sweet smile on her lips. "My skills will serve the realm whether you grant me this position or not, although it seems to me that having it bestowed on me might make me even more of a target in the eyes of our enemies. Some of them might not know of my little friends yet."

Terrence nods slowly. "It might. But then, you're already in line to be the next Queen of the North. This is almost a demotion," he chuckles. "May as well centralize the position, it will prevent your agents and anyone else's agents from having conflicts of interest." He grimaces again. "You won't feel it for a long time, maybe ever, really, Joanna, but you are a Stark, now. There are things that cannot be said to your brother or anyone else in this role." He chuckled in a bit of pain. "But I figure that holding things from your brother isn't a problem for you."

Her smile faded a little now, getting the weird feeling like he was talking about something specific. "May I ask what helped you draw this conclusion?" she asked.

"Long talks with my natural son," he said drily. "Let's move on."

Shit, she thought, biting her lip in embarassment, although managed to keep her expression neutral. Nick Snow. More like Snitch Snow.
"And what is it that you would have me keep in secret from my brother?" she asked, nicely.

"Secrets that don't concern the security of his lands," Terrence said. "State secrets. I'm sure you can use your best judgement." He notes the reddening of her cheeks to confirm his suspicion. Old Terrence can lie as easily as his bastard son, it seems. "Would you like to be our Princess of Whispers?"

"I am sure I can," Joanna replied, her face a mask. It was true that offering her a seat on the Council was basically demoting her, but.. Desperate times, desperate measures, she figured. It was not as if she was in a position to flat out reject it. "I will do it, but only until this war tides over," she said, studying his reaction. "It is as you said; I am to be a queen one day, and I am not too sure how much trust can a Queen of Whispers inspire among her subjects."
