"He does have the tendency to play hero sometimes," she agreed with a nod. "It usually doesn't end well for him, however. But I wish you both the best of luck."

"Thank you, Joanna," Benjen responded with a soft smile. "In the interest of our alliance, our marriage, may I ask how you came to be injured? Were there no guards to protect you?"

"There were, but they must have lost me in the dark," she said regrettably, not seeing how any of this had to do with the alliance. "I like to spend some time alone every now and then, leave the guards trailing twenty or so yards behind. This castle is awfully crowded and I went for some fresh air. Something like this would never have happened at Casterly Rock. Rest assured, I will not be making the same mistake twice."
She wrinkled her nose in distaste. "As to what happened after, I can not say as I passed out from blood loss," she said, clearly embarassed and not wanting to dwell on the matter for long. "And woke up in my chambers."

Benjen nodded, clearly empathizing with her. "I am sorry that it happened at all and will do what I can to set it right." He frowned, looking out of a window, up at the sky. "It is becoming more and more evident that someone is unhappy with our alliance and is trying to drive a wedge between us. I won't let that happen either."

Joanna gave him an odd look, which she adeptly converted into a small smile as soon as Benjen looked back at her. "Before you go, I think there is something you should know about our correspondence, and why I never wrote you back after my father's death," she said, looking a little.. sad, even. "I should never have said those things about him. He did questionable things, but he was, after all, my father. And I miss him sometimes." She took a deep breath and looked out of the window for a while, following his suit. "I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't do anything you might regret later," she finally said, looking him in the eye.

Benjen listened to Joanna, his eyes moving to her, studying the pale woman as she spoke.
"I... understand. Fathers can be... difficult, especially when they are in such high positions as yours was. They want to do what is best for their children and sometimes that clashes with what is best for the kingdom." He leaned forward slightly when she looked at him.
"As for not doing things I might regret... I understand. But in some things, I am like the animal on my house's sigil."
With that he leaned forward to kiss her.

His last words made little sense to Joanna, and the kiss took her off-guard as they'd only known each other for a few days. Then again, men had fallen in love with her in less time, she figured. It took her a few seconds to respond, and she kept the kiss light, and not too lengthy. When she pulled back, there was a small smile on her lips. If only he'd known she'd kissed his older brother in this very room earlier this morning.
"Good luck, Prince Benjen," she said, reaching out to fix the collar of his shirt. "You'll need it."

"We have to make our own luck in these times," Benjen responded, wondering if that was stupid and cheesy or just stupid. He stood, righted himself and nodded. "Be safe." He added, before leaving.

As herbrother and soon to be husband fight for their lives, Lady Joanna receives a visit from Lana Florent, an exile informant, now working for her network. She curtsies before the lady and has a seat. She grimaces at her wound but nods. "Lots going on in the kingdoms while we are here, my lady."

Joanna found it odd how her wound always seemed to disgust people, seeing as it was never actually out there to be seen, but rather under her clothes. "Lady Lana," she greeted with a slight smile. "Have you anything to tell me?"

"I do, my lady," she said. "King Bryce and Rycherd Tyrell are on a collision course to meet outside King's Landing, with the Baratheons caught between them. More miportantly to you, though," she hands her a piece of paper, "someone wants you dead, my lady. Someone with a lot of reach and influence."
The paper has a bloodstain on it, but states that the lioness needs to be tamed. It offers gold and a reward specified as "as we agreed upon."

Joanna almost rolled her eyes at the metaphor, having heard it more times this past year than one should in a single lifetime. "I don't suppose you know who it was meant for, or who it came from?" she asked, dropping the bloody letter on the table like a dirty rag. "How did you come to acquire it?"

"Our agents killed this man in Lannisport eight days ago. He was a foreigner, but we're not yet sure on where. We have people tracking what ship he came from as we speak, my lady." Lana shook her head. "If I had to guess, I'd be inclined to say Volantis."

Joanna raised an eyebrow, looking at the paper once more. "Tell me, Lady Lana, do they speak the Common Tongue in Volantis?"

"They do not, my Lady," Lana acknowledges, "but writing in Valyrian would be a fair giveaway, and lessen the pool of suspects considerably. We will pursue all avenues."
