After her talk with Joanna, Morgan hears a knock at her door. "Morgan, are you there? This is Lauren." Joanna's stepmother has a rather unpleasant reputation, at least among those named Jaymes and Joanna. Morgan herself has never had to specifically deal with her.

Being very friendly with Joanna, Morgan was a little wary of the woman, despite the fact that they didn't know one another very well. But she could not forget her manners so she opened the door and smiled at the woman as if her visit was a high honour.
"My lady. Please, come in. I have simply been supervising my maid.." She gestured vaguely at the mousy-haired servant who was busy folding her clothes.
"May I be of service, my lady?" Morgan asked Lauren.

Lady Lauren enters. She is dark haired and pretty, with a slight edge to her mouth that gives her a cruel look sometimes, but she smiles pleasantly enough. "I do hope that you've been enjoying your time here. Whatever brings you all the way to Lannisport?"

Still smiling, Morgan answered "My friendship with Lady Joanna." She wondered why Lauren thought otherwise, since she made no secret of her friendship. "I am also hoping to do some shopping in the city. I need a new dress, and some inks. I enjoy my trips to the city, and seeing my dear friend makes it all so much more enjoyable."

Lauren nods. "Well, you have come to the right place to buy dresses." She smiles politely, and Morgan cannot tell how sincere it is. "I hear you like to read. What is your favorite book?"

Morgan's eyes lit up and the words came gushing out of her. "I couldn't possibly pick just one! I am very fond of the tales of Lann the Clever, and the histories of the Lannister kings, but there are so many other books worth reading! Archmaester Gyldan's book The Princess and the Queen, or The Blacks and the Greens, is very good. And then there's The Loves of Queen Nymeria, and I have always wanted to read Wonders Made by Man, and Signs and Portents."
Shes topped for breath. "Oh, but you must think be dreadfully dull raving about old books. I am sure you are not nearly as interested in books as I am, my lady."

"Maybe not so much, Morgan, but I have read all of those save the Princess and the Queen. Does it involve how best to get along with a stepdaughter who despises you?" she asks. She takes a seat. "Joanna is going to Gulltown to become Lady of the Vale, assuming, of course, that Lord Richard's gamble pays off and he defeats the northmen in battle. I was devastated to hear of your wedding, Morgan. How unmanly of a groom to insult you so." She plucks at a string on her dress. "But I think we can help each other."

Morgan frowned very slightly. "Queen Alicent's response to a stepdaughter who despised her was to crown her son King of the Seven Kingdoms despite King Viserys' wish that Princess Rhaenyra should follow him as Queen. Thousands died for their quarrel. I can hardly counsel you to follow Queen Alicent's example, my lady. As for my former betrothal, please think nothing of it. It is of no consequence. But I am eager to learn how we may assist one another, of course."

"I was hoping you could go to Casterly Rock for me," she said. "The twin princesses are difficult to manage in the best of times, and they need someone a bit older and wiser to keep them focused on their duties to the realm. I fear Kelsey in particular is rather stringent in her desire to not sail off to Volantis."

"Oh. What makes you think I could manage the princesses?" Morgan wondered aloud. "We are not particularly friendly. Though I would be happy to go and speak with them if it will be of use."

"Well, they could use a friend who isn't trying to trick them into bedding their brothers or fathers or sons," Lauren says. "In return I will help you deal with your parents. They have plans for you."

"They always do," Morgan said firmly. "And I always find a way to get out of it, you may be sure of that." But then she gave Lauren a long, measuring look. "Have you heard of another plan to marry me off, my lady?"

"I have," she says. "You'd be following Princess Kelsey to Volantis. The family is supposed to be rich beyond measure, if you can get used to the thought of slaves tending you." She makes a sharp look at Morgan's servant. "Although I bet slaves have better knitwork."

Morgan shuddered. "Volantis? I think not. What could I possibly want in such a place>? The cloth of Westeros is more than sufficient for my needs." She began to wonder if Lauren was lying to her. She stiffened her spine. "I will not go to Volantis."
