"I wish you well. Hardhome is a four days' ride north and east." Frederic chuckles. "You might like her."

"I would leave at the earliest you will permit, then." he looked at he map once more, eyes drawn to the question mark to the far north. "How many of your rangers will be accompanying me?"

"Savinia eats our rangers in boiling pots," Frederic said. "I respect her, not like her. Those giants of hers cannot be tamed. Besides, I said Lord Kalvin can fuck himself, not that we are best friends of a sudden." He considers a moment. "But I will tell you there are some wildlings at an old house north of here that we will escort you to. They may be susceptible to bribery." He nods. "Yes, you need the Four Theos."

"Very well." Oriax accepted the offer, amused at the Lord Commander's candor. "I take it they will not be bribed by coin? Might I buy some steel off the Watch to barter with?"

"Gold is gold is gold." Frederic shrugs. "Now and again ships from Lorath and Ibben stop at Hardhome. They use it like anyone else."

"Fascinating." he remarked, surprised a people called Wildings had accepted a formal economy. "I will set out at first light then, in hopes of putting our joint problem to rest. Have you any additional advice before I depart?"

"Don't eat the yellow snow. The acorns on the ground in big piles aren't acorns. And you might see a deer the size of a draft horse, with antlers bigger than you are tall. Do not fuck with the deer." Frederic thinks. "Do I need to tell you to wear gloves, too?"

"Sound advice, commander." the sorcerer replied, dryly, departing for the gate.

A few men follow him, among them the ubiquitous Nyles. He is whistling cheerily. The men step through the gate, and Oriax feels an odd sensation as they pass through the Wall into the great beyond. Nyles looks around. "Just as ugly and shitty as the south side."

"One of these days I will impress you, Nyles." Oriax promised, realizing his life had begun beyond the realms of traditional civilization and that now he ventured forth once more. He wondered if this land held as many dangers and wonders as the Shadow. He followed the rangers to the home of the Four Theos.

"You will impress me when you bring me some women as good looking as your former apprentice, Oriax," he said. "Or when you manage to kill that thing."

"Women will be yours if you wish." he replied, echoing Vhagus' words, the promises carrying him forward through the snow. "As for killing that thing, I believe that is your area of expertise."

"Yea, I have a plan for it," he said. "It involves a ballista." the first night is by far the coldest Oriax has ever been. Clearly Vhagus wanted him to die alone and frozen in this alien land.

Oriax used what tricks he could to make the chill more bearable; redirecting his own bloodflow to the areas that required it most and firecalling to store heat efficiently.

Nyles lights an actual fire. It is less impressive yet somehow more effective. When they get moving again, Oriax swears he sees somehting in the fog. Something big.
