"We need the help of all the gods now," Reyna said, very quietly. "I pray that the Drowned God didn't do too much damage."
She then sat straighter in the saddle.
"It's my fault, I suppose. For disobeying my father. Gods...and I had no idea!"

"I hardly think its your fault. I think it has to do with Cassadar and..." She swallowed hard, wondering if the men were all dead. "Well, I think it has to do with that. Our gods have nothing to do with it, and neither do we."

"I'm not so sure," Reyna said. "I don't understand this Cassadar business at all. But I was always told the gods can unleash their wrath upon us, and what if my marriage isn't recognised by the gods?"

"Don't your gods recognize illegitimate marriages though?" She thought of salt wives and of Lord Drumm. "You worry too much, Reyna." Of course, Arania was worried, too...

Perhaps I do. I don't understand what you mean about illegitimate marriages," Reyna said. "But women of the Islands are supposed to marry men of our people. Perhaps the Drowned God is angry with me."

While they ride, much slower this time, the women and Gerald see houses, barns, and entire forests worth of trees have been decimated. A few corpses can be seen; those who were in the tsunami's path were completely helpless against the massive wave. In the distance, after a half hour or so, the ruins of the North's capital can be seen.

"Nevermind," she said, shaking her head. She needed to stop speaking without thinking. "Perhaps he is; perhaps he isn't. I confess I know only a little of your culture. It will give us a great deal to talk about, in the future."
She stared at the wreckages of the houses and forests and life as they rode past. Only a short while ago, they had waved at the people they passed. Now there were no people. "Worse than I'd imagined," she mumbled.

Reyna felt thoroughly sick and not only because she thought the Drowned God was punishing her.
"Is there no chance people might have survived?" She wondered aloud.
"Where would they be? Perhaps the water carried them off."

"Only to their deaths..the pressure of the water is too great to survive...if it knocks down trees and houses," Gerald rumbles. "Only the castle would have had a chance..."

"Then lets pray the castle held, then." She looked at Catherine out of the corner of her eye. For her sake... She wondered even more what became of the men who had gone after Cassadar. Perhaps baby Rickon would be the new King...if he still lived. Her jaw clenched as her mind raced on a tangent concerning a succession crisis. Anything to keep her mind off the horrible destruction around her.

Reyna winced.
"How horrid, truly. It seems it was sheer chance that spared us. But does that mean the people inside the castle might have survived?"
