"Have we heard from her recently? I thought the girl had as good as converted to the Old Gods and forsworn our ways?" Ragnar mused. "I knew her, once, but no longer. Still, it might be worth a try. Though the Starks themselves are no friends of ours. I wonder if the Dustins would care to cross their liege lords."

"Asking questions about a plague is hardly betrayal," he said. "It cannot hurt to ask. Or we just sail north and say fuck the odds."

"Aye, we could do that," Ragnar agreed. "Though it would be foolish not to discover if we do still have a friend in the North, first. But I still think we ought look for maesters on the voyage North. No sense in denying ourselves any opportunity, whatever it might be."

"What's this obsession with maesters?" Pol asks. "You think the Citadel sends their smart ones up to this frozen hell?" He chuckled. "The only castle near the coast is Seagard or Barrowton. We broke Bear Island not too long ago, now."

Ragnar shrugged. "Fair enough. I only meant that the maesters are said to be the most learned men in Westeros, perhaps in the world. If they can't solve this problem for us, who can? I've read a great many books, but none about curious drugs or wildling customs. I don't believe I even own any books that would help us here."

"If it is new, then no books will help us," Pol pointed out. "Especially not from someone who isn't at least a middling sorcerer. Best we learn our own knowledge."

"yes. But can we find a tame sorcerer somewhere?" Ragnar wondered. "Do they have such people in the North, I wonder? Woods witches and the like?"

Pol tapped a finger. "You can hunt woods witches all you like. I'm going north to find the source of this garbage. We can always just take whoever is producing it and force them to spill their secrets."

"We could. but magic is a tricky bastard. I'm all for going North, myself, but if the chance arises to seek further aid, I think we should take it. But when we find those bastards, they'd best be sacrificed. Such men don't deserve to live."

"Of course we'll kill them," Pol said. Then his expression changed a bit. "Unless we can coopt them."

"Might be hard to do with fanatics," Ragnar suggested. "Time will tell. God below, this must be the warning the bloody woman gave us in Sothorys. Said there would be trouble ahead. I thought it was all a ruse to panic us but mayhaps there's something in it after all. So we'd best get our men ready to depart."

"The users are fanatics," Pol siad. "I suspect the producers are just greedy."

"No doubt. How soon can you be ready to leave? We clearly can't delay."

"The ships are being loaded now," he said. "The weather is good and the greenlanders are busy."

"Good news. I'll have my men ready to depoart on the morrow," Ragnar promised. "I'll leave my sister and her ship here if you don't mind. We need someone loyal here. "
