"Probably," he said. "I'm no botanist, but the stuff is dangerous, and worse," he said, "it has a purpose, it seems. People report, rumor, mind you," he frowned at the dead men, "that the stuff makes you use magic."

"Magic? God, what a bloody nuisance!" He spat but there was loathing in his eyes and perhaps a touch of fear as well. "I thought we were done with such things. But why would anyone want to use magic, let alone encourage others? It's pure evil."

"Done?" Pol said. "We are allied with a peerless sorcerer. It is only natural that his rivals will seek to level the playing field. But this," he gestures, "has a price."

"Yes. Our people are doomed if this is allowed to continue. Yet how can our noble ally be peerless if he suffers the men behind this to live? They will have to be destroyed, for the good of our people."

"Westeros is like an insect to him, I htink. He has the million men of the Jade Empire to contend with. For now," Pol concluded, "we're on our own."

"Damnit! So now what? I presume you already have men looking into this." He thought about the exile queen they'd met and the warning she'd given. "These are dark times. Have you managed to catch any of them alive yet? The ones taking the drug, I mean."

"I was planning on sending some men to this wildling port on the sunset Sea," he said. "I didn'teven know they had one. Burn it down and end the problem. The living users don't seem obvious, unless they start trying to use magic, I hear."

Ragnar thought for a moment. "Is it the drug that kills them, or the magic?"

"Neither," Pol said, "From what we can tell. It is something else, but we haven't properly figured out what."

"Damnit. So how do we find out what? We need a learned man to investigate the substance fully, and to find out more about this magic. What sort of magic is it, do you know?"

"Cantrips, from what I see." Pol said. "Learned men are in short supply, since we took the Arbor. The Citadel is..unwilling to send their adepts."

"I can't blame them, really, but perhaps we should take a couple as thralls." Ragnar grinned. "They don't even have to come from the Citadel. The little grey men infest all the castles of Westeros, I'm told. Mount a raid on a castle that lies close to the shore, take the maester and compel him to investigate this matter for us. I'll even do it myself."

"I was rather thinking of heading to the source," the Warden of the Sunset Sea said. "This port of the wildlings. Beat it out of the manufacturers."

"Aye, you could do that,. What exactly do we know about this port? Could we hunt down a maester on the way?"

"Maybe," he mused. "Although that bastard Stark is back in the North. Could see if that Harlaw girl could lend us some aid I suppose, in barrowton."
