Uhtred stands on the flagship, watching Stark's men slowly dwindle into the distance. He looks at the river and a faint sense of unease forms in him. The boy was looking at the Keep with a eyeglass, likely spotting where they would drop off the Ser's forces. "Ser Grafton, a word please?"

"Ser Titus, please," he said, moving over. "Yes, Captain Farwynd?" Titus asked, wondering a bit why he wasn't off commanding his own ship. Boredom, he assumed.

"We don't know about this river for my likings. I would propose we send out a few smaller ships, backed by one of the galleons, to scout out the river." He had thought about this for a while, and had come over to the flagship to ask the man himself instead of a messenger. "If there are ships berthed in that place, I'd like to know what we're up against. If not, we can certainly do more than sit here on our arses stopping no one from going no where."

"And I'd assume you'd want the command?" Titus asked, thinking it over as he drummed his thumbs along the rail.

"Me? No sir. If you want me to do it I'm your man, but I just hate being blind here."

Off to the north, a couple of black dots can be seen. The scout in the crow's nest calls down. "Ships coming from the north!"

Uhtred looked carefully into the distance. He couldn't see any detail, but he wasn't going to take chances. "I'll be off to my ship for now. Might be the waitings done for good. We wait for your command, whatever you choose." He leaves the ship, cursing at the men as they row as fast as possible to the Dawn.

"Aye," Titus said, moving up to the forecastle for a better look, "we'll stay in formation until we see what this is. Keep your ships tight on the right wing. If this proves to be nothing, I'll send word for you to take which ever ships from those in your fleet to scout up river. Eyes open, Farwynd," he smiled, his excitement growing.

The unknown ships approach to within a few miles before slowing. "They're some sort of Ibbenese flags," The scout calls down. "I don't recognize the ship types though. Same size as our galleys, I'd say, but their top decks are covered with some sort of spikes."

"How many do you see?" Titus called up, "you're sure about this? Makes no Gods damn sense," he muttered under his breath.

Uhtred came out onto the deck of the Dawn, plate in place and axe at hand. He stood on the deck staring at the the strange ships that now sat still in water, no signal of any kind. "Any flag from the Tide?" He yelled up at one of his riggers.

Behind the front dozen ships, more are becoming visible, perhaps thirty in all. Some are the smaller and faster raider styles, but most are the same rounded, covered, spiked galleys, unlike any they've seen. Uhtred's man reports no command yet from the Vale.
Jarvis looks to Titus. "I've heard of these. Tortoise ships or something. Can't board em for shit."

Turtle ships. He hadn't seen those in a while. "Get the ballistae ready, aim for just below the waterline. They're going to try to ram us. We have to knock them out before they can get close. The lighter ships will have to move to avoid, keep them at a distance.

"Enough of 'em to give us trouble, too," Titus mused. "Ibannese are decent mariners, too. Lace your boots tight, boys, this hear is what they call a true fight."
