"The dead, aye," Benjen said, looking over the empty town. "Is Logan fighting them, or trying to? Seems we living should stick together, unless he's made some sort of a pact with them." He waved to the ship. "We can take you with us, if you like."

"Trying to fight the dead is a certain failure," she said. "He avoids them, but Oriax's men are everywhere now. Including your friends on the Wall, I think." She looked to the boat. "Perhaps I'll come, but there are many children here. Orphans. He doesn't take children. Not yet."

Benjen frowned, his eyes moving from his surroundings to Julia. "How many children are there in Hardhome? And do you know anything about whoever on the Wall may be in league with them?"

"Probably everyone," she said. "Hard to say. I don't know many black brothers. There are four hundred children here,@ she said. "Or a bit more. I never properly counted them."

Benjen looked down and made some calculations, before turning to Bolton. "How many do you think we can fit on the ship?"

"If we ditched everyone maybe a hundred twenty," he said. "As it is...two dozen?"

Benjen nodded and turned to Julia. "Gather a hundred of the children - the youngest and weakest you can find." He turned back to Bolton. "I want everyone but the crew and captain off the ship. The children are to be taken to Eastwatch." He takes out some parchment and a nub of coal and writes. "This writ promises them triple what they are being paid if they do that."

Gerald frowns. "As you say, my prince. What if Eastwatch has turned too?"

Benjen frowned. "I don't want to believe it... but we'd better be safe. To Gulltown then." He turned to Julia. "How many other people are still living here?"

"Two or three hundred, I'd guess. Another few thousand in the wilds." A round trip from Gulltown is at least a month.

"We need to get these people to the other side of the Wall," Benjen said, though how they would do that was another matter. "Any of the wildlings here of the type to ever go raiding over the Wall?"

"If they were they'd have fled the Grey Man by now," she said. "But he won't harvest the children for his armies until they are adults. He calls it his...pact," she said dis tastefully.

"I don't care what he calls it; the man is insane. The children aren't safe," Benjen frowned. "No one is. Everyone here is just fodder for his army." He sighed. "Logan must know this."

"He is aware," she said. "But he killed Savinia's brother in a duel years ago and she had him marked for death. There was no alliance possible between them."

"Savinia is dead," Benjen stated. "But she'll stay that way, unlike Logan and the rest of his men if they stay here." He rubbed his forehead, trying to think. "There has to be a way..." he said, more to himself than anyone else.
