Harlan considered. "Why did you not go to me or the Lady Arania, instead of sending armed men to assault us? We are at war with the Ironborn," he said. "Lord Quentyn helped burn Lannisport. Twice," he noted. "And a woman of western blood seeks his aid."

"Lord Quentyn and I became friends before our people went to war. I do not condone his acts of war against my people but I have no power to stop them. As for Lady Arabia, she knows I am here."

"I hope so," Harlan says. "If this will settle the issue, I will grant you entry to the Citadel pending examination results. I will dismiss Archmaester Vern for conduct unbecoming his station, but he will have to remain here for now. Lorn is gone so I'm not sure what to do with him yet."

Morgan's eyes lit up. "You'd allow that? Truly? Would I have your guarantee that no harm would come to me? I would do my best to be a good student, I swear it." She smiled brightly. "But what happened to Maester Lorn?"

"Sometimes it's best to stop negotiating while you're ahead," Harlan said. "If this goes unfortunately I suspect the Lady of Oldtown will have my head. And your friend's. You'll be allowed to take the entrance exam. Any harm that comes to you shall be returned to the perpetrator. As to Lorn, well, we will find him," he said.

Some of the tension drained out of Morgan.
"Thank you, Archmaester Harlan. You are very kind. If I can study here in peace I will be well content."

"Now, please have your...friends release my men. ". Harlan looks annoyed. "And any stunt like this will be sent to His Grace held."

"I will," she vowed. "Thank you. I'm ready to speak with Lord Cleftjaw now, I don't want to delay you."

Morgan left the room and headed over to Quentyn.
"We need to leave," she said. "I've sorted matters with Archmaester Harlan."

Quentyn released his grip on Mychel's chain, but did not sheath his sword. "Define 'sorted'."

"Harlan is giving me the chance to study here, if I can pass their exam, and promised no harm will come to me. He's also agreed to deal with the men who gave me trouble before."
She gave him a little smile. "I think it's the best offer I can hope for without unleashing hell on the innocent bystanders. And I doubt the offer will be made again, so I had better take it."

He raised an eyebrow. "You trust him? What's to stop them from imprisoning you again, or just having you killed?"
