Uhtred takes the glass, sniffs it, and downs it in one swift, burning gulp. He shakes his head for a second, and fills a second to actually get the taste in.

"What do you think"? She asked. "I have fond memories of drinking rum with my brothers, telling tales in the firelight. I don't think they ever cared that their tales were not suitable for a woman's ears. I told some tales of my own, too."

"It's fine. A good burning certainly, a bit more sprightly than the grog my men cook up in the ships hold, ha!" He quests about looking at the bottles all lined up, then grabs a thing of clear liquid, a Norvos concoction that you could use to clean a ships hull. "Here, this'll put a burning in your belly that you're not like to forget."

She took it with a nod and then winced at the fierce burn of it. She'd drunk many things in her time, but nothing like that. "Bloody hell! It's a wonder nobody thinks that's poison."

Uhtred takes a sip of the bottle and winces, "Pretty sure the Volantis actually do consider it one. But you don't want to remember the day you just had, it's the perfect thing for it. What's next?"

She thought for a moment. "Tyroshi pear brandy?" The drink was a pale amber colour, sweet and slightly warm with a pleasant aftertaste. "My first lover always tasted of pear brandy. It's a favourite of mine."

Uhtred'll take the glass, this time not drinking the entire thing, but rather tasting it first and swirling it around in his mouth. "Usually I'm a man who prefers the burn, but taste is pleasant" he allows "though gods, this party lacks a certain something. No throwing axes, no contests, gods. After this, we should go to the streets. Rile up some fun there..."

"Aye, we could do that, but I don't think we can throw axes in the local taverns. There would be hell to pay if we did that. But I'd like to see more of the city, certainly."

Uhtred snorts "I know we shouldn't, doesn't change how it is. Not even any honor duels here, no bravos to kill each other for their stupid honor!

"Ah but the bravos are all for show, are they not? They start trouble for no good reason. The finger dance is a test of skill and courage."

Uhtred shakes his head "While they are idiots with their honor and challenges, the duels are to the death usually. Sill and courage enough. Their version of the finger dance I suppose, though they don't consider it as fun as we do."

"Fair enough. But they dress in fanciful clothes, paid for in gold, isn't that so? No man of the Iron Islands would consent to wear fine clothes that hadn't been bought with the iron price. Nor would I, and I am no man. I am not fond of finery, though." She glanced around. "Tell me what you know of the Lyseni. Ragnar calls them decadent, whatever that means."

Uhtred acknowledges that "Yes, they are a trading city. No doubt about that. The Lyseni... care very much about the pleasures of the world. I think that's what Ragnar was talking about. They've been wealthy and had riches stretching back centuries, so their people have adapted to it. They would never be able to survive on the iron islands, but they do know their ships as well as most in the free cities. Behind Braavos and Volantis in power, certainly, but reaching upwards all the same."

"I see, when people talk of the Lyseni, they speak of their riches or their love of sex. I have often wondered if there is more to them."

"We have only one degree of separation then." he was amused. "What are the odds?"
Killion inspected the man critically, as if searching for crippling wound or maim.
"You look as if you can still swing a sword and still have vigor left in you." he remarked, clearly some cultural confusion. "Retiring is for old men whose days of glory are past them. It would be a terrible waste to stop killing if you have a talent for it. As you said, we deal death. It is who we are."
