When Ray was a little boy he always played with crude wooden blocks and outside in the dirt, digging through the turf and sculpting objects from his imagination in mud. As he got older, he could use bigger pieces of wood and timber that was strewn about. Walking around collecting adequate lumber for his small little forts offered him quiet contentment.
From an early age his parents knew that he was a smart, creative boy, unlike their dumber daughter and average first born son. When he was not out and about he was spending time with his brother. The two boys received traditional training and education that stretched the means of the family. Like others the parents planned to peddle their pretty daughter away for marriage while with Ray’s natural gifts and talents, they thought that he could be sent to the Maesters to learn and continue his growth into something more. There was a lingering sadness in the eyes of his father and mother that he had not been their first born son, but on the other hand, there remained hope that he could still one day raise the status of their family.
His parents hoped that his sister would fetch a good wealthy man given her relative attractiveness and demure features. Troubles in the area had seen less than accommodating crops and business to their home which resulted in tough times. For Ray’s parents it was an increasing worry that they would go to zero with nothing more than a whimper.
His parents put on a brave face in front of his siblings. Ray and his brother led a sheltered life and would play in the yard or around their land like boys usually did; chasing after each other, fighting (both with play swords and their bare hands), exploring the wilderness, playing hide and seek and visiting the other boys in the area. It was around the age of 15 that his parents stumbled into the opportunity to have Ray sent to the Citadel. It was one fortunate event in a long line of bad luck and outright disasters that had been out of their control. It would be a big change for him and his parents, he was one less mouth to feed after all, and he realized with a sense of maturity that it would be best for his family. Being observant as he was, the writing seemed to be on the wall for him and his parents, but his brother and sister lived oblivious to the drama that was looming over them.
Tragedy continued to strike at the beleaguered family while Ray was away in Oldtown. Ray’s older brother died from a fever. He had been a healthy boy and had grown into a strong man but the sickness seemingly had stuck at random. Ray’s parents mourned while Ray studied and tried to stay his grief with more work and studying. It was at this moment that Ray considered abandoning his oath and studies in the Citadel to return home to bring some stability to his house. But the consequences would be severe and he would bring shame to both himself and his family. He was stuck and had only the option of continuing. His parents wrote that their neighbours were complaining to the lord and encroaching on their land now that they were weak and without a son at home. Ray’s sister, while pretty…well she was only pretty and would not amount to much of a steady hand on their land. Ray’s parents hoped that by marrying her off to another family in the area they would be able to help support their claim and protect against their rivals.
It was hard not to think of home. Ray felt he had a responsibility to protect his family. While he was learning many important things in the Citadel, he reasoned it would be all for naught if his family would fall to the wayside. So Ray poured himself into his work. Ray had continued developing his natural talent and craft skills in engineering and was tutored in things like diplomacy and finances and the language of Valyrian. These traits would be useful for helping a lord or lady manage a house. It was known that he was a bright man and quite observant of the small details and nuances of plans.
It was when Ray was left alone one night when his teacher had stepped out to empty his belly (spoiled milk did it) that he found himself staring at some boring letters regarding the ordering of supplies for the citadel. With a sip of his warm lemon water he tried to keep his eyes open. A playful thought crossed his mind and he sat up in the chair. What if the barrel of ink got swapped for a barrel of pig fat? He smiled and while studying his teacher’s writing, and practicing a few times, he slowly put his hand down to the parchment. A month later and the Citadel Maesters opened up a barrel of pig fat. Several men lost their breakfast that morning with a whiff of the stench. Ray’s friend happened to be there and described the event. Ray kept a straight face and later that night plotted another devious trick. These little games became quite the diversion and kept his mind off the struggles of his poor family’s slow fall.
Ray also had to learn to sew well and along with his knowledge of the house sigils he could sew one on clothing had he the supplies to do so. While he wasn’t necessarily into arts he did take pride in putting together or fixing up clothes. He was even capable of sewing in hidden pockets into his robes, something other Maesters always talked about. For those that were willing to pay, he offered this service to them.
One day news came that would change his life forever. His master teacher handed him the letter and as he read the words on the parchment he gritted his teeth. Seeing his student so distraught, he gave Ray the night off to rest. While alone he cried with the letter close to his chest. He had lost his brother years ago, but now…his family gone? It was unbearable and now the grief he tried to stifle came forth unbarred. He was a man now, not a 15 year old boy, he had lived his life carefully planning and making sure that he was making the right decisions (apart from the tricks he played with his writing).
He didn't put much thought in what he would do next. He calculated he had nothing to lose, the shame he would bare for abandoning the Citadel would be but for himself. He did not have much of a plan but he would return to the land and see what was left. He had skills now, a particular set and he would use them to get revenge. He was confident as he strode through the halls. He gathered what belongings he had, went down to the stores to get food, parchments, inks and various other supplies, and set off for home.
Character’s Physical Description and Personal Traits
Ray’s appearance is nothing spectacular. He is mostly a thinnish, wiry man that spent long nights studying instead of drinking or eating. His hair is short and he has never let it grow very long, usually having his head shaved to keep a practical look and feel. For the last several years he has worn the chain and robes of the Maesters and again, he prefers the practicality that his clothing provides. His hands are big and slightly worn from his time as a child scuffing them up. When he was young his brother broke his nose, so it healed slightly crooked. In all, he is an average looking man that favours function over style.
Ray has always taken a measured approach to things though from time to time he can have playful ideas that he puts into motion at the spur of a moment. He had no problem making friends and earning their respect during his time at the Citadel. He is good at managing money but has not been considered cheap. He knows when to socialize and when to hit the books. He was not often seen being angry and he is well at managing his emotions but is often sensed by people that he is motivated by a great fire that rises.
