"Not quite the glorious affair our master-at-arms led us to believe, was it?" he said with a sad smile as he recalled better days, standing unsteadily to his feet only to be bombarded with the chorus of the dying.

He slowly steps away from the large group, making his way up to where he had left his horse, looking back to see if anybody followed him. "Perhaps I can take a shot and ride away before the know where it came from.."

"Not even close, really. And the sound.." they hear the screams of wounded and dying men. "Well, let's go get some water."

He grabs his crossbow and reloads the heavy tipped bolt, scanning the soldiers for Morrigen, not entirely sure what he looks like but sure it would be obvious to spot the leader.

Roland followed Selmy, the whole scene a surreal nightmare. Water sounded welcome at least.
"How fares your family, Willem?" he asked, feeling that discussing days passed was better than the present. "Your sisters are no doubt married by now. A bride and children waiting for you back home?"

"Two boys, one more on the way. Going to be a while til I see them again, I think." He looks about. "I think your brother is here with us, but I won't say nothing to him if you don't want me to."

"I will pray to the Mother that you get the chance to." Roland offered, wondering how close he had come to slaying friend or kin on this field. "No, you'd best let him know. These family reunions have become a rarity and it will be good to hear how he is managing the Roost I left in his care."
The Connington brothers had been close growing up, though the younger had never understood the older's intense devotion to the Seven. One had chosen duty and the other the gods, somehow ending up on opposite sides of a battle.

He disarms his crossbow and replaces the bolt in its quiver, mounting his horse and riding away. The only thing guaranteed when he took that shot was his own death, not something he'd give so easily for a Lord, now dead, he'd just met less than a day ago. He'd return to the camp, explain the situation, try get to what pay he could, and leave for greener pastures. That's what he did. Who he was. "And nobody can make me regret it." He said to himself as he urged the horse into a gallop.

Selmy nods. "He'll be in. You can stay in your tent on your honor, of course." He leads him to the Connington tent, where Ser Rafford Connington is eating a turkey leg and drinking wine. He looks up at his elder brother and rises.
"Roland? You were here?" He looks sweaty but unharmed.

"Aye and thankfully none the worse for wear." he said, relief of his brother unharmed outweighing the discomfort of the situation. "Though how you can eat with the scene outside is beyond me."

He offers him a leg. "Fighting is damned tiring! And besides; I skipped breakfast to reshod my horse this morning. I do not regret that decision now."

"No that was a wise choice" he said, waving the turkey leg away with a feeling of nausea. "How did you and the Roost's men perform?" he asked, the friendly competition of brothers pervading even such a grave matter.

"We lived," he noted. "We were nearer the rear, and only a few of us made it up before the fighting ended. Our time will come at Blackhaven, I suspect." He finishes his leg. "It is a pty you won't be fighting with us, my brother."

"Better to raise my sword against my countrymen than my gods, brother." he replied, an edge to his tone.
