"I want a giant stack of gold for this service to my employer. What he wants, well, is chaos. Pure, spiteful, uncontrolled chaos. His god apparently demands it."

"R'hllor?" she asked. "But you don't.. you don't follow his god. Why serve him?"

He just smiles. "Let's not jump to so many conclusions." He shrugs. "He offered me you if I did my job."

Jo realised she'd been squeezing the knife's handle so hard it began to hurt. Looking down at it, all she saw were white knuckles. "And what is your job, exactly?" she asked a bit shakily, still looking down.

He shrugs. "I'm a bounty hunter. I only go for very exclusive bounties, though."

"Then get on with it," she said, looking up. Her voice was surprisingly steady.

"I'd rather not fight; you are far too precious both professionally and aesthetically to hurt." He sets a bottle on the table. "Drink that, and I'll release your brother."

She didn't even take a double look at the bottle. "What, do you think I'm an idiot? You drink it."

"I'm telling you it's a poison, my lady. You will fall asleep and wake up when we're on our way, your brother safe and sound."

"I will not," she said stubbornly. "How can I be sure you let him go? I don't even know if you have him, I only have your word that you do."
Joanna pressed her lips together and thought about this. Being brought to Cassadar probably meant she was going to be another sacrifice for their Red God, or worse. Didn't the man say anything about keeping her? She was sure about one thing; they needed her alive. She raised her blade to her throat forcefully enough to draw a bit of blood and smirked. "And what would happen to you, should you not deliver what you're supposed to? All this time of creeping just thrown in the wind."

"You think your guards came pounding on your door because nothing is happening?" He shrugs. "Very well. And put the knife down; you look silly. As though you'll exsanguinate yourself. And if you did, well, your father would have no children left, for after I gave your dear brother to Cassadar in your stead, he'd give him to men who would use him as a woman until he bled to death."
He smiles sadly. "And if you keep staling for time, I will head out the window, dodge your father's armored guards, slay anyone I must, and bring you back proof of his unfortunate circumstances. You have very similar eyes. Perhaps you'd recognize his, even if it wasn't in his head any longer."

Joanna lowered the knife slowly and dropped it, a slight tremble in her hand. She knew very well that Jaymes was more valuable than her. And she could never let something like that happen to him.
"Fine," she said and took the bottle reluctantly. "Just don't.. don't hurt him." She drank deep, straight from the bottle.

Nothing happens for a bit, and she thinks perhaps he had been playing an even crueler game than he was, but sedatives don't work as quickly as books make her think. After a minute or so, her head starts lolling about as though she were nodding off, and she instinctively jerks back upright and starts to panic a little. Her hands feel like all her blood is in them; too heavy to lift now and she's falling and can't catch herself...the last thing she feels before her vision goes black is Nicholas Snow's hand catching her before she tumbles out of her chair.

Joanna looked up from a heavy leather-bound book. "Go on," she prompted.
