Joanna sighed impatiently as she figured how to explain her problem. "I have.. these weird headaches lately, and they've been getting worse," she said after a moment or two, rolling her eyes. "It's probably nothing, but it can get really annoying sometimes, you know? Doesn't let me concentrate."

"Ah, I see. Spectacles, then. That is no problem, my lady." Maester Garth nods. "Most people need them and are too ashamed to speak up, after all."

Joanna looked at the man in absolute horror. "Is there no other way?" she inquired. "Something I could drink?"

"I am not a magician, my lady...but if you use spectacles now, you may save your vision for later. I shall make them as pretty as possible, and you don't need them always," he promises.

The prospect of saving some vision instead of being half-blind forever outweighed these hideous specatcles, Joanna decided. "Just don't tell anyone," she blurted. "I'll only have to wear them when I read, right?"

"Yes, my lady. I shall...maintain my silence on the matter."

"Good," said Joanna, bit calmer now that she was assured everyone wouldn't know. "Can I go?"

"Let me measure first..." He measures the distance between her eyes, then from ear to ear. "Yes, lady Joanna, you may go."
