"I know, I know. But I prefer to be on my own. Its easier to think without the Lady hovering over me." She eyed the harp. "Is it difficult to play?"

"Find out for yourself," He replied, pushing the harp over to her end of the table. "Your left hand plucks the chords, your right the melody."

She pushed the glass aside, taking the harp into her hands and trying what he said. "Like this?" She asked, plucking the strings tentatively, scared of breaking it.

She played a strange, dissonant chord which nevertheless sounded interesting. "Something like that," Frances said with a chuckle. "Pluck the string closes to you, the one three away and then one five away. A major chord."

Arania did as he said, managing to produce something that sounded like music. "Oh! That's much better!" She laughed. "I don't think I'd be any good, though."

"Everyone can learn, though only few have a true talent for it," Frances explained. "Not me, I am merely experienced." He laughed softly.

She put the instrument back on the table. "You played well enough to my ears. So, are you a harpist by trade?"

"Only as a hobby," Frances explained, finishing his next cup of wine. "I am Lord Bryce's man in the Marches."

"Lord Bryce...Dayne?" She thought of her father's warning about the Lord... and she realized she had heard the name "Frances" before. She looked at him carefully, trying to remember what had been said. "And you have come to Mason's Keep with him, then?"

"With him and the rest of my countrymen," Frances said, nodding. "Does my relation to Lord Bryce scare you? Do they tell stories of what he does to his enemies in the Reach?"

"My father mentioned him once, but he didn't tell me anything specific." She eyed him pensively, drinking slowly now. "Have you any particularly interesting stories to share?"

"I'm not the type to tell stories," Frances admitted. "I despise gossip, for one, but it would not be fair to divulge details of Lord Brycen's work."

Arania smiled. "Loyalty to your Lord. Always a good trait. I must admit, though, I have no idea why he's considered so terrible. I assumed it was simply some old rivalry or such between old men."

"The men of the Stormlands will extrapolate on events they themselves did not even witness," Frances explained. "Exaggerations, rumours... knights as bad at gossiping as young maidens."

"I assure you, I never gossip. I simply listen." She had to admit to herself that she was intrigued by him, a harpist with a sword at his waist. He certainly could tell her many interesting things... "But if you have nothing to say, then, well." She took up her wine again.
