"Indeed. The thought of pursuing one of King Terrence's daughters for my son has also crossed my mind. They seem suitable enough." She thinks. "Much as it may annoy me, I have also considered talking to Lord Beric Hightower. He is a Reachman, of course, but he has never caused us offense, and his knowledge of Citadel politics is unparallelled. Surely someone can shed some light on this matter."

"I will try to speak with him, as soon as tomorrow, my lady," he replied. "The tournament cannot last long, but I would send a rider to Nightsong, with a message to send back to Yronwood by raven. I would increase the garrison to 2,500 to make sure the Dondarrions are aware that they cannot catch us unaware."

Nalya nods. "Sound advice, Lord Oberyn. I shall make sure Lord Fowler is aware of the tension." Lord Dayne watches the exchange silently, as he tends to do.

"As you say, my lady," Lord Yronwood said, with a nod.

"Now, my lords...it has been a long night for everyone, and no chance on it being a shorter tomorrow. Let us rest and prepare for a trying time."

As the meeting breaks up, Lord Bryce Dayne asks Lord Oberyn to wait a minute for a private word.

He does wait.

Lord Dayne drinks from a flask. "You tell quite the tale, Lord Oberyn. I do not question your word; we have fought together enough for me to know your worth." He thinks. "But if the Red God's followers are behind this...why waste such power on a sideshow frivolity? If they could raise the dead that litter the Boneway's expanse, they could overrun Dorne with a hundred thousand corpses."
"I think something more is at stake. This has all the trademarks of a message...and no one knows how to send a message better than I."

Oberyn frowned, seeing the clear logical link. "But what message? How can they expect us to be intimidated into inaction if we do not even know who we are dealing with?" he replied. "I do not know what was taken from Mason Keep, but it must be something of importance to have merited a plan so elaborate for its removal."

"Not one message, then. Framing the Ironborn, the heresy, this business between the Northmen and the Lannisters...our own Princess's chambers threatened...it feels like a simultaneous attack on everyone. The theft could have been of secondary importance to the sheer carnage. My sources inform me it was only a matter of chance that the Ironborn camp wasn't wiped out."

"King Euric would not have stood for that, not by any means..." Oberyn trailed off for a moment, as if thinking of the possibilities. "I've heard it was the Prince of Winterfell who threw the Lannister girl off a ledge, or that he was involved in her falling but did not throw her himself. Accounts have been garbled but war seems likely; the Gold King is certainly stubborn enough to invade the North again, despite the failures of his father and grandfather when following that exact strategy."

"I think not," Bryce says. "Kyle is ambitious and bold but not stupid. He cannot beat Everett Blackwood in open battle without some element of surprise. And with our Princess indebted to this prince, you can well know he fears Dorne and perhaps even the Iron Islands swooping in for our pieces of flesh. Seven hells, the Kingsland's more adventurous sorts may even join in to grab vulnerable pieces if they see an opportunity."

"Indeed. If a war cannot be provoked so easily, we cannot assume that is the goal at all. So who gains from this night's display of power and theft? That is what we must discover, so we know how Dorne might be effected by the coming turmoil," he said slowly.

"We must dig deep, and use our...friends in the north, I think. They have information we do not." Bryce breathes in deeply as he sees the impaled men. "We will need more pikes, too."

"Before long, I am sure that you will be right. There is actually another matter I wanted to broach with you; I would offer my daughter as a bride for your son Ser Markus. He rode with us, to Masonton, and I have seen few finer fighters in my years on the battlefield. Few with more courage either, he is truly worthy of the title he bears and I would be honored to call him my son-in-law," Oberyn replied.
