I don't hate Aslaug as such, but she's not Lagertha and she's not the love of Ragnar's life. I cannot forgive Ragnar for his betrayal of Lagertha. His decision to have sex with Aslaug doesn't bother me too much, but bringing her to his house and asking Lagertha to share him was just plain wrong.

Ragnar does not have a love of his life. The only character Ragnar says he "loves" is Athelstan.

As usual, we have a tendency to look at Ragnar's "betrayal" of Lagertha through modern eyes. Yes Lagertha is awesome, but this was a society where more sons equaled more power. Popping out kids was like 98% of a wife's job. Her inability to give him more children overshadowed all her excellent qualities, especially as he rose in station and needed to secure his tenuous position. Setting aside a barren wife (or worse) was pretty much the norm in that period. Arguably offering to let her stay in his household rather than turning her out on the street was the most loving move he had.
Also am I the only one that gets a serious Will/Hannibal vibe off of Ragnar/Athelstan. Keep in mind that I'm only through Season 2.

Hehehege. Zack's otp. Hannigram till he dies. But yeah, kinda, I mean an older mentor character who "betrays" regrets it and then they become consensual bff.

I think of Ragnar and Lagertha as genuine partners rather than her being subservient to him and male needs. Aslaug, however, is clearly not much more than his brood mare once she goes to live with him. I even feel sorry for her because of that at times even though I'm pro-Lagertha. (I tried to hate her but I don't any more). Also, to be honest, even though male obsession with sons is be the "norm" in medieval society (and even in more recent history), I'm still not ok with it and probably won't ever be. I just see the Ragnar/Lagertha dynamic as being about more than that. Maybe it is, maybe that's my personal head canon, but it's still the one thing I can't forgive Ragnar for.

What's wrong with polygyny or for that matter polyandry?
