Character's Personal History:
Benjen Stark is the first born son of King Terrence and Queen Janelle and was brought up appropriately. He was first fostered at Runestone when he was six, where he spent the next five years learning all the courtesies and mannerisms a young heir should know. It was at Runestone where he first encountered Ami Royce, whom he shared his first kiss with. The two quickly developed up a friendship, riding through the Vale of Arryn picking flowers for each other, and taking many of the lessons with the maester together.
At age eleven however the easy treatment was over. Benjen was sent to Winterfell, where he was taught the art of war by none other than Lord Rickon himself.
Swordsmanship came the hardest for the young boy. The daily lessons ended with him bruised and beaten, unwilling to even eat or play with the other boys at the castle. For a while Benjen secluded himself until he saw Kal Stark fighting in the training yard on one of his short visits to Winterfell. Seeing the beauty in the young man's ability to fight, Benjen decided he wanted to become as good, if not better.
He sparred with Kal several times, who taught him a few of his own tricks, and began to eagerly take part in the lessons from Winterfell's master of arms. When the call came up that Wildlings had managed to pass the Wall Benjen was one of the first to throw on his armour and saddle up. Though only fourteen at the time, Benjen was given command of a small troop of men, whom he lead through the forest alongside the main force, before striking around and attacking the Wildlings from the flank. He killed his first man in the fight, taking down several other Wildlings as well, before an arrow struck him in the shoulder. When he had healed enough Lord Rickon informed Benjen that it was time for him to return home.
After the many years away, Eddard's Rest proved little of a home to Benjen. Never a drinker nor much of a socialite, the young man spent most of his times practicing in the yard and reading old tomes about battles. He then decided to set off with a few men and hunt down bandits in the Neck. It was there that one night a young member of house Reed found him when Benjen was standing guard. The Crannogman told Benjen many stories of his people and told him that if the North ever needed defending they would do so.
Benjen returned to Eddard's Rest with a new found confidence, spending some time with his brothers and sisters, as well as making friends in the city. Fifteen now, Benjen started to notice girls more as well. He knew it was unlikely that he would be able to wed for love but that did not stop him from kissing maidens in barns and generally getting into a little bit of trouble.
For two long years Benjen remained at Eddard's Rest, until his father called for him to return to the Vale and help fight some of the mountain clans that had become a little too dominant over certain parts of the Vale. With valour Benjen rode to the Vale, and with valour he fought, taking down one tribe of clansmen in an ambush and fighting against several others alongside such men as Fillmore Corbray and Ser Richard Arryn. After the fighting was done Benjen decided to visit Runestone again, where Ami Royce was eagerly waiting for him.
She professed her love for Benjen, who told her that as much as he wanted it, it could never be. The two argued, consoled each other and spent a whole long month ignoring one another but finally they found that their friendship was too important for them to behave like such children. Benjen took Ami to Eddard's Rest to meet his family and even took her for several rides in the Riverlands.
But yet again it was battle that stood between the two. This time it was several small unruly lords in the North who had decided to rebel. Benjen immediately set out North, pushing his men hard until they finally arrived in Winterfell. There he learned that the lords had been pushed back by Lord Bolton but were still at large. Eager to show his ability, Benjen took his men to the Dreadfort and beyond, fighting alongside many Northern warriors against the rebellious lords.
In what has become somewhat of a famous battle in the North Benjen slew the leader of the rebels himself before leading a brutal cavalry charge that pretty much ended the battle. Upon his return to Winterfell Benjen was given all possible honours and when he arrived back home at Eddard's Rest he received a hero's welcome.
In his absence however Ami Royce had left and when Benjen sent a letter to Runestone his reply told him that the location of the girl was a secret. Feeling spurned Benjen decided to embark on a tour of the Riverlands to find himself a suitable wife. Many girls did he meet though none of them were to his liking, until he arrived at the Twins. Danya Frey, thirteen at the time, immediately took his breath away. He tried to woo her without luck, too her out on rides and dined her, but all to no avail.
With a feeling of bitter disappointment Benjen decided to once again return to Winterfell, where he felt more at home than at Eddard's Rest. As it happened he arrived on the evening of a small feast, where he was immediately given a position of honour at the high table. But even before he reached it Benjen saw Ami in the crowd, standing alongside none other than Malryas Bolton. Knowing of Bolton's reputation Benjen realized immediately the reasons for Ami's leaving. With a smile he approached the girl and asked her for a dance, to which she obliged.
Over the last three years Benjen has slowly started fitting more into the roll of prince and future ruler of the North. He was continued to visit many castles in the Riverlands, Vale and North, as well as sitting in on his father's councils and offering advice. Still unmarried, Benjen knows that soon the time will come where a bride for him would be chosen. But he has also not forgotten his Reed friend in the Neck and has visited the man several times, learning new things about the Old Gods.
In the last year Benjen has found himself busier than he would have liked to have been following the defeat of Cassadar. At first he went north to assist the northern forces against continued raids by Ironborn, often leading small bands of warriors against roving bands of ironmen along the western shores. There he took part in countless skirmishes along the Stoney Shore, Sea Dragon point and at Cape Kraken. When White Harbour was threatened, Benjen made his way to the city and took part in a bloody naval battle that made the young prince never want to be at sea again.
Then things got worse, with war breaking out in the Vale and the Riverlands as well. After a brief stop at Eddard's Rest to recuperate and help oversee the reconstruction, Benjen rallied some men and led them in defense of the Riverlands. Mostly avoiding pitched battles with strategic ambushes against Goldland forces, Benjen nevertheless lead a force against the Western host besieging Raventree Hall. He broke the siege and sent the enemy forces back west. The fighting over the next months was even more brutal than in the North and twice Benjen found himself facing Hollis Clegane's own force - once winning and once losing. In the second meeting he briefly dueled the giant, managing to hold his own for a short time before having his shield arm and several ribs broken by Clegane's mace. He would have died then and there had it not been for his brave personal guard, lead by Karyl Crowl, who extracted the prince at a heavy cost. Severely wounded, Benjen retreated to Acorn Hall.
Benjen remained there until well enough to return to Eddard's Rest, where he remained until his arm was healed. Rather than staying bedridden however, Benjen spent his days in the yard, working back the strength in his arm and keeping fit enough to return to the fighting. His nights were spent between the tactical map table and strategy books, though he made sure to spend time with a by-then heavily pregnant Catherine. He intended to return to the fight, though the birth of his twins delayed him. With the Riverlands well defended for now Benjen decided to stay at Eddard's Rest and spend time with his wife and children. A year has passed now and Benjen is ready to continue the defense of his future Kingdom.
Character's Physical Description:
Benjen stands at about six foot and has black hair which he keeps trimmed above his shoulders. Usually clean shaven he does sometimes sport a light beard which grows the same colour of his hair. His eyes are a typical Stark grey though flecks of mossy green can be seen when the sunlight hits them. Benjen is handsome if not overly so and has a lean, slightly muscled build.
In the last year Benjen has developed a stronger build, his shoulders broader now and his arms thicker. He sports a thick beard now and his hair has grown longer and wilder. Ever since the naval battle at White Harbour his eyes bear a slightly haunted look.
