Appearance: Rycherd Tyrell is a tall muscular man with shoulder length straight dark hair, setting off piercing blue eyes.
Reputation: Rycherd Tyrell is known as one the pre-eminent battle commanders of the Reach and indeed of Westeros. Known also for his piety he has been recognised as Defender of the Faith of the Seven by the High Septon.
Character Personal History:
Third son of Lord Harlan Tyrell of Highgarden, himself the third son of Lord Willas of Highgarden, Rycherd was never expected to inherit Highgarden. Mace Tyrell's eldest son Willas ' the Lame', a much more capable leader than his father, inherited Highgarden on his father's death in 306 and was present at the signing of the Treaty of Westeros in 310. By this time Willas was the father of three sons Robert, Willem and Harlan. The Lannisters invasion of the North took place in 324, was opposed by Lord Willas, but supported by his eldest son Robert. Robert was courageous but was also prone to a laziness and weakness of character that discontented nobles and the other Kings exploited to stir discord with his father. Robert defied his father and took a contingent of younger sons and disaffected nobles north. The invasion is stopped by Lord Rickon Stark of Winterfell, who ambushed and slaughtered thousands on the banks of the Red Fork. Robert barely escaped with his life but the Highgarden force is destroyed. Many members of the Reach's noble families are killed. Willas is furious and after an attempt by Robert to seize Highgarden, which was opposed by his younger brothers Willem and Harlan, Robert is exiled by his father. Robert fled to Storms End before plundering the Reach and causing such mayhem that his father Willas called upon King Lannister. Relations were not helped when Willas discovered that Robert's mother, Lady Marya, was secretly sending her son money. At a battle in January 1079 Robert unhorsed Lord Willas in combat and succeeded in wounding him, stopping his attack only when he recognized his father's voice. Humiliated, Willas cursed his son and returned to Highgarden. Eventually in 327 father and son were reunited by the efforts of Robert's mother Lady Marya and a truce lasted until she died in 330. Robert left Highgarden soon after the death of his mother, after falling out with his father yet again and spent several years travelling throughout the rest of Westeros as a roaming knight.
In 334, as Lord Willas lay on his deathbed, the Prince of Dorne and King Harris Baratheon of the Stormlands, with the support of Willas' eldest son Robert Tyrell launched a co-ordinated invasion that nearly succeeds in conquering the Reach before Lord Dickon Tarly slays Harris Baratheon at Highgarden. The invasion is subsequently repulsed and Robert Tyrell is captured, imprisoned and formally disinherited but the castle of Tumbleton is taken and held by the Baratheons. Lord Willas dies shortly after and is succeeded by his second son and now heir Willem the Red.
Willem ruled Highgarden well in the six years after his father's death. In 340 he fell ill and close to the point of death, Willem recovered after a priest of R'hllor, the Lord of Light was credited with helping him to recover. Willem become a follower of R'hllor. Influenced by the Red Priests, Willem allied himself with the Baratheon king Garry. Persuading the Lannisters to join them in an attempt to take the Northern capital of Eddard's Rest, the three middle kingdoms invaded the north. The invasion was smashed by the renewed might of Lord Rickon Stark, aided by the Ironborn. Willem's devotion to the worship of R'hllor was unaffected though, with it being widely observed in the years after that it was the Red Priests that ruled Highgarden. As Willem was unmarried, his younger brother Harlan was the heir. It was Harlan, - bolstered by his own marriage to the spinster sister of King Domeric Lannister (his own first cousin) in 342 - that opposed the spread of the Red Priest's influence. That opposition had become so virulent that by 347, (the year of Rycherd's birth), the Red Priests were openly trying to persuade Lord Willem to free his eldest brother Robert and make him the heir to Highgarden if Willem died, effectively disinheriting Harlan, as well as trying to broker Willem's marriage with a Baratheon princess. Shortly before Willem was to do as the Red Priests wished, Willem was killed in a hunting incident. Seizing power immediately, the new Lord of Highgarden immediately took steps to have the Red Priests' influence in the Reach curtailed. His elder brother Robert's imprisonment was tightened and his movements restricted until he died six years later in 353 in a fall trying to escape from prison.
Lord Harlan ruled Highgarden justly in the following years with he and his wife Alinore Lannister having a large family of five sons and three daughters, of which Rycherd was the third son.
After the death of his eldest brother Willas just before his own birth, the young Rycherd grew up in fierce competition with his elder brother Hendry, the heir to Highgarden. At the age of twelve in 359 Rycherd was fostered at Casterly Rock to his much older cousin, the new king of the Goldlands Kyle Lannister and remained at Casterly Rock for four years, learning the basics of what would be a formidable military career.
In 363 tragedy struck. Rycherd's elder brother Hendry died after drinking tainted water while on a hunting trip aged only 18, much to his father's grief. Rycherd as the new heir of Highgarden, was recalled by his father from Casterly Rock to learn the art of governance of the Reach. Three years later in 366, Rycherd's younger brother Garrett who had very recently married his second cousin, the heiress to Brightwater Keep, was killed in a tournament in Kings Landing. Garrett's posthumous son Arthur was born later that year.
The following year in 367 war broke out between Dorne and the Stormlands over King Garry Baratheon's supposed murder of his wife, Princess Faylynn Martell. Nightsong fell to the Dornish and it looked however that the Dornish were going to conquer most of the southern Stormlands. It was the twenty year old heir to Highgarden that led troops south to support the Baratheons on his father's orders. War with Dorne was averted when the Dornish troops, not wishing to fight the combined force of the Tyrells and Baratheons, did not pursue their advantage. Upon receiving undertakings from the Dornish that they would not advance further, Rycherd withdrew the Tyrell forces, leaving the Baratheons to treat further with the Martells.
Two years later in 369 Rycherd's father, Lord Harlan died and Rycherd became Lord of Highgarden at the age of twenty two. His sister Mina also died in childbirth that year with his younger sister Jenna so traumatised by the experience that she prevailed upon her brother and mother not to marry her until she felt she was ready.
In the nine years since he became Lord of Highgarden, Rycherd has developed a reputation as a leader of men and soldier repulsing attacks by the Ironborn on the coast of the Reach, both on land and sea protecting Highgarden to the east many times from their ravages. Still unmarried and childless, apart from a bastard son Philip Flowers, Rycherd's acknowledged heir is his nephew Arthur, the 12 year old Lord of Brightwater Keep, although his only surviving youngest brother Ser Jon Tyrell also has claims to succeed him. Rycherd knows that the solution to the succession problem would be to marry and sire a legitimate son. At the urgings of his mother, he is currently putting out cautious feelers for a bride.
Rycherd maintains reasonably close ties with the Lannisters. His mother is the aunt of King Kyle but he feels resentful of Kyle's sometimes overbearing ways. However equally he sees Kyle as important to helping return Tumbleton to the control of the Reach - an overwhelming ambition since it was lost in the reign of his grandfather.
Rycherd has become increasingly pious since his father's death, regarding the Reach as being in the forefront of rescuing Westeros from the heretics. Upon his marriage to Jessica Lannister the High Septon was moved to declare Rycherd the rightful King of the Goldlands and the Defender of the Faith throughout Westeros - a position that Rycherd has accepted due to reasons known only to himself.
