In battle, many prisoners are taken. At war's end or during lulls, prisoners exchanges were common. In cases such as these ransoms would be paid. Usual rates are below:
Common soldiers: If ransomed, usually just traded for other soldiers. Regular Infantry: Frequently landed men, these men would usually pay a fifth of their wealth, which converts to 1 gold per 10 or so in game terms. Regular cavalry/minor knights: 1 or 2 gold apiece.
Landed knights/younger sons of bannerhouses: anywhere from 5-10 gold
Heirs to bannerhouses/younger sons of Lords Paramount: 10-20 gold
Lords or heirs to Lords Paramount: 40+ gold
Lords Paramount or Royal Princes or Kings: 20% of the houses wealth or more.
These numbers are guidelines. Also ransoms may not be paid if the other side agrees to trade a prisoner of comparable worth.
