"I shall take that as a compliment," he smiled, "though my cooks would take that as a mortal insult; they believe they are some sort of mythical creatures in the kitchen," he joked. "Culinary types are insufferable sometimes, but the fruits of their labor cannot be downplayed."

"I agree. Good food makes all the difference between eating because you have to, and enjoying the experience. I thought that a place busy with excavations and the like would only have plain food. I'm glad I was wrong. But I didn't realise Your Grace's palace would be so close to everything going on here. I'm really looking forward to the experience."

"Good," he said. "I look forward to seeing your work." He thought a second. "I'm not going to get any letters accusing me of kidnapping, am I? I hate those."

She laughed. "I've no intention of making accusations. I'm here of my own free will, in the spirit of friendship and cooperation. I hope Your Grace has no intention of kidnapping us?"

"Of course not," he said. "Emperors can't kidnap people," he said. "Well, in that spirit, I propose a toast to the first meeting of Citadel and Valyria," he said, raising a glass.

"To the Citadel and Valyria." Morgan raised her glass. "And to joint enterprises."

They clink glasses. Small talk continues but after midnight they set off to their rooms. There is work to be done. Olyvar has had a bit too much good wine and is stumbly, while Sara is whispering to Morgan. "Is he not everything a monarch should be? Handsome, rich...gracious?" She shivered. "And we're here in the least understood part of the whole world!"

"Oh yes. It's so exciting," Morgan gushed, having drunk just enough to find everything interesting. "Are you in love with him already? How long will it take to make him fall in love with you?"

"How aren't you?" she asked. "I have no idea; polite men make it immmmpossible to tell if they like you or just are that way to everyone," she noted. they stumble on to the house. Olyvar takes the opportunity to puke quietly on the side of the house, away from them. "I'm not really a master seductress," she admitted.

Morgan glanced at Olyvar to reassure herself that he was alright before she turned back to Sara.
"You've had lovers before. I assumed you knew what you're doing when you find a man you like. But it won't matter if he likes you, he'll pursue you, which is even better." She shrugged. "Not that I'm the best person to advise you here. I've only had one lover, and I don't even want another. I miss him, but nobody else has ever tempted me in that way." She paused to smile at Sara. "Not even Vhagus. He's all yours. I don't think I'd want a man of his power pursuing me, truly. It must be impossible to live your own life when your man is so powerful."

"Maybe," she said. "Maybe not. It's knowing how to harness your freedom to his power to become more than you were, I think," she said. "I can't believe otmorrow we're going to see an actual demon."

"I know." Morgan hugged herself. "It's exciting and scary at the same time, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity to make a real difference in the knowledge we have about the creatures. Legends are all very well, but they don't help sailors deal with troubled waters."

"No," she agreed, "they do not. Let's get to sleep. Tomorrow and the days to follow are going to be rather busy," she said.

"You're right," Morgan agreed. "Goodnight Sara, Olyvar."
She headed to her room for a good night's sleep.

The next morning they gather for their quest. Sara is up and dressed early, and she eats eggs and bacon silently, enjoying the taste at dawn. When she sees Morgan she smiles. "Let's go!"
