"Excellent." Her eyes brightened. "That's interesting, truly. And a little frightening, because it could happen anywhere. The books we have suggest that magic caused the Doom. But most all our books were written by maesters, and they are mostly against magic. It's said that it was the maesters who destroyed the remaining dragons, centuries ago." She paused to sip some wine. "Though they clearly weren't entirely successful, as we know now."

"Not entirely," he agreed. "Are you against magic?" he asked. "Superstition is rearing its ugly head again." He nodded. "It is possible magic played a role, but how large of one is unknown. Perhaps a powerful sorcerer accidentally summoned the powers of the flames below the earth once too often," he said. "Tell me your experience in academic matters, please." Emperors say please exclusively for a show of politesse.

"I'm neither for nor against magic," Morgan admitted. "The time may come when I study the subject as part of my studies at the Citadel, and perhaps then I will have a better answer for Your Grace. Until then, I shall resserve judgement on the matter. I have been studying a great many subjects, from history and ravenry, to economics and languages. My High Valyrian is quite good, though I'm told my pronunciation needs a lot of work." She laughed.
"But we scholars mostly use High Valyrian for reading old books, anyway. At present my studies focus upon healing and astronomy, but I could not pass up the opportunity to join Sara here. I didn't think it would come again. And my interest in history doesn't stop with earning one link. It's possible to earn several links of the same metal, and I thought there would be much to learn here. I hope to contribute to the limited knowledge the Citadel already possesses on the subject of Valyria. With Your Grace's permission, of course."

"Granted," he said. "We shall recover much knowledge on this," he said with evident approval. "And I now have recorders from the West to spread the word of the miracles of the old Freehold." He smiled a charming smile. "The healing could come in useful," he said. As they eat, Sara and the emperor exchange small talk, and Morgan gleans that the first tunnels are open to the outer city, but the area is still exceedingly dangerous.

After listening for a while, she interjected "And what of the legendary demons that haunt the Smoking Sea? Has Your Grace any experience of such creatures?"

"They aren't in the sea," he said, "they're underground. They are one of the less pleasant things about being an excavator here, hence the soldiers," he said. "Have to clear them out of every cavern we manage to open."

"I see. Would it be possible for me to sketch the corpse of one at some point? The Citadel will find that particular knowledge interesting. Though of course we can still discourage further visitors if that is your desire. But I would like to see what the demons really are."

"Of course," he said. "I imagine you can even become rich writing of your adventures facing down the demons of the dark caves of Valyria," he said. "And it could be helped by even being true." He waves to a room. "Every writing implement known to mankind is in there. It is yours to use at your leisure. Ravens cannot fly this far, but now and again we get letters to Mantarys," he said.

"Thank you. Will we have the freedom to go where we please? With escorts, of course. We are not warriors."

"Avoid the lakes north of here; they are sulfurous and poison," he said. "You'll die within ten minutes of nearing them. Otherwise, go wherever seems most useful," he said. "This island covers about eight square miles."

"Of course. Are there any other settlements worth noting?" She asked. "Anything in particular we should search for?"

"The main expeditionary cave is half a mile west," he said. "I assure you you cannot miss it. The first few rooms have been cleared of anything bad, and are almost untouched from an academic standpoint. I leave it to your professional hands," he said.

"Of course. Do you have any scholars here already, or are we the first?" She asked.

"I have some of my own," he said. "They know not to interfere. Every region has its own way of studying I hope we learn from each other," he said. "If you all need entertainment, the gathering hall is through that door. We have music and dancing and wine for those who need a break from the stress."

"Thank you. Even we scholars like to rest occasionally." She glanced down at her plate. "The food is very good. Your cooks would equal even the best cooks at the best feasts in Westeros."
