Mantarys is a city that lies to the north of The Lands of the Long Summer on the very northern tip of the Sea of Sighs. It is connected by Valyrian roads to the ruined cities of Bhorash and Oros.[1] The demon road passes through Mantarys. It has a sinister repute and is allegedly a city of monsters.

Morgan Brax and her companions arrive in Mantarys and begin the search for a person named Riley. Morgan thought it would be a good idea to try the taverns first so that was where they headed.

Sara looks about at the city, which contrary to popular reputation is exceedingly wealthy, modern, and cosmopolitan. "Vhagus conquering this place did wonders," she breathed. "I heard it used to be a slum." Olyvar grinned but was silent until they got to a tavern, where he asked in horrid High Valyrian if anyone knew who Riley was. The bartenders just chuckle and point to the palace.

Morgan, listening, frowned. "To the palace then. Riley does not sound at all like a nobleman's name. He must be a servant of some sort. Let's go."

They head to the palace. It is gigantic and well decorated, and a guard in black armor, clutching a giant sword taller than Morgan stares at them through a black eyeslit. "Names. Purpose," he said in halting Westerosi.

She smiled at him. "I'm Morgan Brax and this is Sara Banefort and our escort, Olyvar Manderly. We come in friendship from the Citadel of Westeros to present gifts to the Emperor Vhagus."

The figure is silent, then he points to Sara and Morgan. "Go." He points to Olyvar. "Stay." Sara looks at Olyvar nervously but squares her shoulders and takes Morgan's arm. "Let's go my dear. Hopefully Riley is a peaceful man."

Morgan nodded. "Sorry, Olyvar. We;ll be back soon enough, I'm sure." She smiled at Sara and walked inside.

They end up in a giant hall, a throne at the far end. The room is stuffed with supplicants and politicians and soldiers and more, but within thirty feet of the throne no one stands or sits save someone speaking at the foot of the stairs. On the throne is a young woman, certainly nowhere near thirty, with red hair that flows to her ankles. She looks about. "She gets the rope. Incest is for Targaryens, not peasants." As the sap is dragged off, she notes the Westerosi. "And so they come!" she said. "Vhagus said you would be here one of these days!" She pointed imperiously. "Come here, then. Quick, I haven't all day."

Morgan shot a worried glance at Sara since she had expected to meet Vhagus himself, not some woman. But she came forward and bowed (she was wearing breeches).
"My lady, we come to pay our respects to the mighty Emperor...or his representative. My lady, we thank you for agreeing to see us."

She chuckled. "I'm Riley, Governess of Mantarys. The emperor is southeast of here in old Valyria," she said. "consider me his...mouthpiece to the real world. You're the ones from the Citadel, then?"

"We are." Morgan spoke more quietly than she'd intended. She hadn't expected Riley to be a woman. "I'm Morgan Brax and this is Sara Banefort. We both come from the Westerlands, which are part of the Goldland, but we study at the Citadel of Oldtown. I did not realise we were going to meet the Governess of Mantarys. We're honoured."

"I was in Oldtown!" she said excitedly. "Arania and I debated the value of Arbor wine. Fabuuuulous," she intoned. "So, then, you want to go to Valyria. Why in the gods' green earth should the emperor take the pair of you out there, to his own sanctum?"

Morgan glanced at Sara. "Because we can help him learn about the history of the Valyrian Empire."

Riley looked amused and started spouting vast amounts of garbage speak in High Valyrian. She returned to Westerosi after a second. "I see. He gave instructions to let you through to Valyria," she said. "Take the night off and go to the docks at sunrise tomorrow."
