"Oh yes! Do you have a Myrish lens? We should take a look at their banners."

Olyvar hands her one. The ships have green dragons on them, the banner of Meereen. "If they stop us, don't say anything about Vhagus," he warned. "they may be at war. "We're traders going to Volantis."

"Of course, but don't worry, they probably wouldn't speak to me first anyway. They'll probably just think I'm your wife."

"Maybe," he said, "maybe not." The small ship they're on is dwarfed by the galleys and galleons of the fleet, and further engulfed by the size of the great trading ships they are protecting. "That fleet is worth more than King's Landing," he breathed.

"I suppose it is, but we shouldn't get involved," Morgan suggested. "Unless you were hoping to persuade them to trade with White Harbor?"

"Not slightly," he said. "I wasn't thinking Meereenese ships would be so far west, is all. Much less a fleet."

"So something strange is happening. But I am not sure that it's our responsibility to find out what. We have another purpose here and worrying about Meereenese ships will do us no good."

Olyvar watched as the fleet passed by. "No," he agreed, "it will not. But best not to ignore signs," he said. "It may form part of a pattern." The little ship is ignored. "You don't have much interest in politics, do you?"

"Not really. I was often at court before I joined the Citadel, but my dislike of politics was one of the reasons I decided to leave, along with the ones you already know about. The maesters are not supposed to get involved in politics but I know some do. If I ever wear the chain, I hope I am not consumed by ambition. I wish the Royal House of Lannister well, truly - Queen Joanna and I were once friends - and I dearly hope my own family prospers, but politics is not for me. There is something so sordid about it, truly. Everyone jockeying for power and influence. I hate that." She sighed heavily. "Is it like that in the North too?"

"We are more distant; harder for politics to matter as much," he said. "One can be alone for a long time in his own lands." He chuckled. "I think the struggle for power made the Citadel possible. Everyone wanted knowledge and needed to weaponize it."

"Perhaps. Yet most lords value swords and the men to wield them more than they do knowledge. Or so it seems. Else some ambitious Grand Maester would have forgotten the maesters' vow of service and raised an army of maesters to rule the whole of Westeros. It's a wonder that there are enough honourable men to prevent that happening, though I suspect the cult we overthrew had ambitions of that nature."

Olyvar nods. "They run Westeros, I don't think the maesters have any intentions of ruling. Studying in those moldy halls is a poor ay to learn to settle a dispute or raise morale," he said. "And I know plenty of maesters who take their vows...less than seriously. Particularly the abstinence portions."

Morgan laughed. "Well, yes. Abstinence is so common among sworn orders but it can't be easy to enforce. On the one hand, it mustbe hard for a man to give up something he enjoys, but on the other hand, everyone is curious about something they have never experienced. So that is the least surprising vice of all, truly."

"indeed," Olyvar said as he looked over the seas. "Did you take any vows, then?" He smiled mischievously as he looked at her.

She rolled her eyes. "No, I haven't finished forging my chain. The only vow I have taken is to marry for love, if at all."
