"We'll ask your slaves that and see if they agree, shall we?" she replied skeptically.

"A thrall is hardly the same as a slave. Either way, thralls have revolted twice in our history. I would contend that serfs revolt against their lords far more often. A few of our noble houses are descended from thralls. Find me a lord on the mainland that traces his lineage back to serfs." he asserted, with a small smile. "I would remind you that thralls were commonly used by the First Men who ruled Westeros prior to the Andal invasion, including your own ancestors. Should you really condemn traditions that laid the foundations for your realm, even if you no longer feel the need to adhere to them?"

"Yes, you should, we look at history and we learn from it, we do not need to be condemned to repeat it, we should look at our fathers and mothers and their mothers and fathers and strive to be better than it. It may sound a dream, and incomprehensible to you, but I am sure there were those before us who had the same reservations. Do not worry, I am sure your people will eventually catch up," the last sentence held a lot less malice than the rest of the recent conversation, perhaps an attempt to steer the boat they were on away from the storm and back into more pleasant waters.

"Yet it was the actions of your ancestors that allowed you into a comfortable enough position to contemplate them." he said with conviction. "So do not judge us for what we have done to reach a similar position, what we have done to survive. Just be thankful we have turned our aspirations from the mainland to farther shores."
"To being better than our fathers and may they rest in peace." he said, raising his glass.

Harwyn raises his glass, having been merrily drinking as the conversation steered away from needing his input. "To remembering the past, but building the future."

Robyn raised her glass in agreement, but her mood had once again been soured.
