Named after a nearby pool of blue water, Castamere began as a mine like Casterly Rock. The large supply of gold and silver gems allowed House Reyne to become near as rich as the Lannisters of the Rock during the Age of Heroes. After building curtain walls to guard the entrance with two stout towers, the Reynes constructed keeps and halls. As the gold and silver dried up, the mine below was widened and converted into halls, galleries, bedchambers, and a vast underground ballroom. While the surface fortifications resembled those of a minor lord or landed knight, nine-tenths of the castle is subterranean.
Queen Joanna of Casterly Rock granted Ser Lyonel Vikary the castle and lands of his ancestors, the Reynes, raising him to the status of Lord. In the past four years, Lyonel has restored the castle to its former glory, aided by his discovery and subsequent freeing of former gold mines controlled by various bandit leaders.
