January 22nd, 384
About nine thousand men approach the castle from the south, a thousand or so of the mountain clansmen joining them on their way through the hills. As they enter the last few miles, where the forests thin and the ground grows rocky and ill-suited to any sort of plant life, to the west they see a few dozen ships tied up, and an Ironborn host assembling.

Benjen, riding at the front of the host, calls a stop to the march before selecting a group and venturing over to speak with the Ironborn.
(Did my scouts say anything about the other keeps?)

The Wall seems utterly abandoned. His scouts find no sign of black brothers, dead or living, nor any host of the dead at all.

Benjen approaches the Ironborn commanders. "Nothing," He says, a shake of his head. "My scouts have found nothing. No one. The Wall is abandoned."

Malik Greyjoy frowned. 'Mine say the same. I landed a dozen men at the Frostfangs. Fucking nothing. Frosthome. Nothing. No ships, no dead, no fucking death knights, nothing." He looks about. "Haven't been to BEar Island yet but can't see any reason to suspect it's any fucking different."

"No doubt," Benjen said grimly. "It's an obvious trap, but not just that. These people," He says, waving at the army. "Marching up here for apparently nothing. Not the best for morale."

Malik shrugged. "They're out there, wanting us in them fucking wilds," he said. "Mark my words. King Euric said you're in charge," he spat, clearly annoyed at sharing command. "What you think we should do?"

"We man the castle," Benjen said, needing time to liaison with the other force. "There's more troops coming from the South, no doubt and we're not about to walk into the wild."

Malik has the ships guarded by a thousand men. "We'll take this one at the Gorge and whichever other one you want manned," he said. "May as well have some men at every one, spread the supply foraging out. This could get expensive real fucking fast."

"The Shadow Tower and Greyguard," Benjen said. "I want every second keep manned between here and Castle Black manned. I'll station some men at Hoarfrost Hill and take the Nightfort myself."

Malik nodded. "Fucking pleasant," he said. The army starts to move out.

///
As the armies start preparing to set out, a band of men and women and children are sighted north of the Wall, heading for it as fast as they can manage. There's a few hundred of them at most.

"Open the gate!" Benjen commanded, pointing at some men in a military manner. Y'know. "I want some scouts out there now!"

Some men head out. Malik looks oddly at them. Lord Tallhart's men advance out. After a while they come back. "They say they are survivors from some wildling lord's host. Logan or something. they're fleeing. Say life can't be found north of the Wall anymore."
