"We are the Watchers on the Wall!" they call out as the llong line of refugees evacuates. The horde facing them isn't large, not yet, maybe a few hundred or so strong. It moves slowly but steadily, inexorably, and Benjen can see a strange looking man at its head, wearing a tattered cloak of House Greyjoy. The dead and the few living archers among them are mostly silent, save the deads' unnerving moaning and the tramping of feet. Among their number are two giants' corpses, eleven or more feet high, wielding tree sized clubs, rotting flesh trudging towards them. Julia's eyes widen in dismay.

Benjen breathed slowly, doing his best to keep his nerves in the face of the walking dead. "Those men with axes, I want you on those giants! Hack their legs away and bring them down! Everyone else, shield wall! If we can take down that dead Greyjoy then we might disperse them!"
He drew his sword and raised it high. "Winter is coming, men, but we stand in its way!" He raised his shield and dug his feet into the ground.

Round 1:
Clearly this battle is unwinnable, so the objective is as follows: Each round is one hour. The refugees are averaging just under three miles an hour. The zombies can move about 4 miles an hour, the living a bit faster. Getting to round 3 will allow the majority of the refugees to escape, 4 will allow more, and at 5 any attempts to escape will be rolled at -5 per round fought.
Benjen: 174/185 Gerald: 144 Orys: 159 Julia: 136
Pol: 189/196 Dead and: 105 (-20) Loving it: 119 (-35)
It turns out that dead giants are easier to kill than human ones, provided one has fire arrows, as the beasts ignite rather easily and almost cannot be missed by any archer who can draw a string.
Regrettably, despite Ben's best efforts, it turns out that being outnumbered ten to one by an enemy that knows not the meaning of fear is rather more difficult. His men unleash fire arrow volley after volley, but the horde swarms through, and some sort of terror permeates most mens' hearts, making order difficult. Benjen charges ahead and cuts two corpses down, and immediately he sees the former prince of the Ironborn smiling at him. He jams his sword into the death knight, but his hand feels frozen as it makes contact and the champion lazily raises a hand, and a chilling pain beyond bearing knocks him to his feet. He feels his life being literally sucked out of his body, but his bodyguard Gerald dives in his way and hacks at the man again, his axe doing little save impact, but disrupting the spell's channeling, at least.

Round 2:
Benjen: 190/123 Gerald: 112 Orys: 103 Julia: 172
Pol: 160/112 Dead: Deader:
Julia's flaming arrows gnite the giants more and they char as they collapse. No one has time to cheer, and the men push the zombies back long enough to get to higher ground; the dead despite their lack of pain are horrible at negotiating uneven terrain because bones can still shatter and they trample each other going over holes. There are more than enough to make up for it, though, and every man who falls is standing and attacking his comrades of just a minute before. Pol puts his sword away and concentrates on simply draining people of their life and raising them as he walks by. Clearly some other tactic to fight the 'men' is required.

Round 3:
Benjen: 145/161 Gerald: 128 Orys: 119 Julia: 144
Pol: 101/189
Their new position is devastating for the undead, as Ben's small and diminishing force fights from the narrow defile they had had to climb earlier. The dead soundlessly shuffle, moaning as they attack again and again, and the troops are weary and spirits are breaking. Pol watches as his horde cuts the defenders apart, arrows glancing off him, though the fire makes him flinch a bit. "We need to run!" Julia cries out. "There's too damned many!"

"This is the best chance we'll get!" Benjen manages to call out through heaving breaths. That had been a close one, with the undead reaver, and he knew that had he had the sword it would have gone a different way. "One last volley of arrows and we run!"

Disengage:
Benjen (-20): 133 Pol: 99
The few remaining men fall back, the dead shambling after them. In short ranges the living are much faster, and for now Ben and the survivors can regroup and hope the refugees made it far enough.
