The Dome of the Night's Ice, early 383.
The dome of the Others shines like an obsidian mirror in the harsh daylight, the structure some eldritch crystal that is hard as steel and clear as glass. The silent beings make weapons and skirmish and argue in the halls, but the sorcerer once known as Oriax of Asshai cares nothing for it. The Great Other, the dark god himself, has tried to conquer his mind, to bend him to his will, but for months a stalemate has emerged, the indomitable magician a match inside his own mind for even a demigod. To the south he feels men dying, his soul filling with hunger at the thought, and he stops to see through the thousand eyes of his army as it cuts into the Ironborn.
A man enters, the emperor Vhagus, the fire to Lord Oriax's ice, and he smiles as he peers about. "Lord Dayne has been ended," he said pleasantly in greeting. "It seems I was right about you, Asshaiian. You had such potential, and at last it is achieved. And," his magically projected form scanned, "just in time for peace in the lands to your south. The power you wield," he breathes with satisfaction, mixed with a touch of...envy? "And an army of the damned to enforce your claim to be my successor." He nods. "Excellent."

"The word successor implies a continuation, Vhagus." the sorcerer replied in a bored tone the emperor was all too familiar with. He had never understood Vhagus' ennui in his mortal form, having believed that infinite power only meant infinite possibility. He knew better now, the only discernible emotions in his conscious now disgust and avarice, his dark passenger cold and gluttonous. He wondered briefly whether five petty demons vying for control were better or worse to share a consciousness with than one god. "I am an end. I am the end."
He spun his pearl-handled dagger absent-minded in his cold hands, its notched and worn blade replaced with a pale metal of his own design. With near omnipotence he had little use for a mundane weapon now, but it reminded him of who he was and sometimes that was the difference between remaining so or losing control.

"You see it now," Vhagus said. "Knowing the perfect answer to everything gives you only one solution to everything. Omniscience is the death of freedom. I like your death Knights," he admitted. "Slaughtering them with their own heroes. How...Westerosi of you." He looked about. "The end to life. A goal worthy of you, perhaps. To steal the dead from their rest and to overthrow hell itself, perhaps. A shame their Wall in prisons you yet." He shakes his head. "You have been my greatest success, lord Oriax. I hope you don't disappoint."

"It seemed poetic to have savage cut down savage." he drummed his cold dead fingers against the arm of his icy throne. He was not sure why he sat at all, comfort losing its use, as well as food and water. The pleasures of the flesh were all that held some appeal now, ironic since they had always been a means to an end in life. "They will all serve when I will it. You will serve too. My prison is far from impregnable and I've no shortage of time."

Vhagus nodded as he finished looking about. "Poetry. Something Dayne never had," he said. "Something almost no sorcerer does. Your old comrades awakened Balerion in Asshai, perhaps you feel his slumber disturbed. You awoke...this hungering god and walk the earth." He began to fade. "When the dead rule Westeros, I shall come. Prepare." he said as his vision faded.
When he had vanished, the death knight known formerly as Lord Redwyne walked in, the strongest of the fallen men his cult across Westeros had found, dragged from the shallow waters of the Sunset Sea. "My lord," he said in his dull voice, "they came as you promised. And we have another..candidate."

The Great Oriother watched the so-called emperor fade, black eyes set inside a mask of ice, fixated on the spot for a time longer before he turned to his servant. It was not as if the report was news, as he had watched through the eyes of the shambling corpses as if he were there himself.
"Bring him forward then." he intoned, in an unnatural voice that carried but somehow did not echo in the domed structure.

The dead men brought the mostly still frame forward. He had been etched from neck to toe in tunes and sacrificial cuts. The Dreadwyne looked on impassively. As the dark God sees him, Oriax feels the slight loss of control required for the titanic release of power. A black web crawls over the body, the tunes shining blue and sickly green and then fading to grey. Gasps of steam come from the man's mouth as he struggles, and after a while the steam ends, and the newest of the dark lord's generals sits up. "My lord," he greets in his gravelly voice. "I live to serve."

Oriax had long ago stopped find amusement in the irony of that statement. He reached out his consciousness to probe the minds for information regarding his identity, memories, lands, culture, knowledge, secrets, family, and friends; adding it to the collective undead hive mind. The assimilation of information had been exhilarating at first, a scholar's wet dream, but now seemed mundane as anything else. Useless information was filtered out, with any useful strategic weaknesses that could aid in the war against the living brought to the forefront.
