"Perhaps," he said. "Perhaps a faction of a different bend entirely." He considers a moment. "did you recognize any of the men, specifically?"

"No, as far as I know, I had never met any of them before. But they had managed to buy or threaten a group of newly arrived novices I knew." She frowned. "I had never before visited Oldtown. How could I possibly know the maesters who serve there?"

"It was just a question," he said. "Buying new arrivals is never difficult. You will need to go back to Oldtown soon. The Hightower sisters could be in danger."

"Yes, and the women from the Westerlands too," she agreed. "But I cannot go back without allies and a force sufficient to protect the women. And I need more evidence to give me the authority to speak. It would be best if I came with the king's authority, too."

"The king is in dorne. His wife will help you I'm sure. Our new queen is a soft hearted but sensible woman."

"I will speak to her," she vowed. "Can you help me find others to join my cause? I need to make sure the Citadel does not know of my intentions."

"If you want disgruntled ex maesters, you need to go to Lannisport," Russ said. "Few lords would seek to go against the Citadel."

"Lannisport is on my list of destinations," she said. !But I do need men with power behind me, as I said. What about the lords whose daughters or sisters now reside in Oldtown? They might be in danger too. I know Sara Banefort is there."

"The Reach lords may help you, my lady, but I know not," he admits. "Their power is broken and most of them are beaten men, or dying in Dorne as we speak."

"Yes, that's why I hadn't thought about approaching them," she said. "But I'll see what I can do. They above all have someone to lose if the Citadel decides to act against Lady Hightower. How could thy let their sisters and daughters suffer?" She still thought about approaching Lord Banefort. "I'm hoping the North will help us too."

ooc: only reachmen sent daughters there. Sara Banefort was a volunteer. The idea of the policy was to give Arania hostages close by.

Russ looks a bit surprised at that. "What concern does the North have in this?"

"Northmen study at the Citadel too. I've an acquaintance from the North, he arrived shortly before I did and knows what happened to me. He fears corruption, as I do," she explained.

"Perhaps they will move, then. If you need an ally you need a violent and ruthless ally." Russ nodded. "Easy to find in a northman."
