"That issue is of concern," he admitted. "The legalities of violence are supposed to be reserved for officials alone." He frowns. "My apprentice Gavriel is in Lannisport. He hears good word more than I." He acratches a note on parchment. "You might want to hire some discrete individuals, too."

"Thank you, I'll do as you advise," she said. "It certainly seems to me that there is something strange afoot here. I'll need all the help I can get to determine whether there is a corruption at the heart of the Citadel, and I do believe there is." She sighed. "I know the Citadel was founded with noble aims and I don't want to believe that its goals have changed. It's more likely that ambitious men have secured positions of power and seek to exploit the Citadel's power and renown for their own gain."

"All men are ambitious," Raynald notes. "These are reactionary traditionalists in the eldest mold." He leans back and begins coughing. "I must take some dreamwine myself. My cough worsens every year."

She gave him a worried look.
"I am sorry to hear that. My mother used to swear by honey mixed into wine. But I shall not take up more of your time if you need to rest. You have been most helpful to me, and I thank you."

Morgan hurried away with the flask of dreamwine in her hand. She decided to speak to the Master of Whispers before visiting the castle library, and then she'd seek out Gavriel in Lannisport.

Lord Russ is in his office overlooking the Sunset Sea. He is writing a letter. His men usher the girl in. As is his habit, he looks at her and says nothing.

She curtsied to him.
"My lord, I came to ask for your assistance regarding a grave matter. I am sure a man of your eminence and wisdom will know of the troubles I experienced in Oldtown."

"I have," he said. "The maesters have always been rather reactionary."

"Have they?" She asked. "I did not think so but then, how could I know? I am hoping you would be able to help me investigate further. I had the distinct impression that the men who arrested me might have been operating without the full cooperation of their fellows."

"You wish to investigate personally, then?" He looks curious. "What sort of qualifications do you have for such a task?"

"I was there. I suffered at their hands. I must do something even if that something is to plead with those with more experience to take action. But I have spent my life with book, I know how to study. And I have lived at Court, too. if that is of any use." She paused a moment. "I cannot rest until justice is served."

Russ taps his desk with his fingers. "Very well, then," he said. "We must find who these maesters have aligned themselves with, to give them such confidence against the Lady Arania's will."

"Yes, I think so too. Who has enough power to cause trouble for the Lady of Oldtown? I cannot believe the royal family has anything to do with it, but who else could it be? The Citadel has tended to stand aloof from the civil wars, aftera ll. Men from all over Westeros study there. Perhaps one of the other kings, seeking to undermine the power of Oldtownn and thus the power and wealth of the Goldlands?"
