She shrugged. "Perhaps so, but as we are ourselves new to the Citadel, we have no old relationships to worry about. For myself, I think the risk is worth taking, but I will not pressure you to join me on my visit to the ladies if you are worried. You've been good to me, Olyvar, but you are a kinsman of Lord Manderly himself. I am just a low-ranking bastard. I know what it is to be judged for something you have no control over, as these women will soon learn. I think it's my duty to speak with them."

Olyvar shrugged as they walk alone. "Because you're a woman too?" he asked quietly. "And I doubt you're a bastard."

Panic shot through her and she was almost tempted to deny it, but that might be the worst thing she could ever do. She caught his arm to hold him still, glanced around to check if they were alone.
"What makes you think....that?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Olyvar looked at her. "Men don't find excuses to pee in private," he said. "And I can't imagine some lowborn bastard who might have to compete for a spot with these women would be altogether excited to have competition," he said. "Me, now, to me this is fantastic. If I accidentally get one of the failures pregnant, I get a wife and I can study on my own from White Harbor. You seem like a decent person, though, so I thought I'd let you know that your secret is fragile, and the archmaesters will figure it out eventually. They're not all blind, old, and a bit stupid outside their respective areas of study."

"I always knew it wouldn't be easy," she confessed. "I've been hiding it as best I can, but it's still new to me, and I've not had anyone to confide in. But now, perhaps I can risk telling Lady Arania the truth? Then I won't have to hide for years and years. I will have the right to be here."

Olyvar shrugged. "I suspect, being a woman, that you're not a bastard. Who would educate a bastard girl so well, right?" He leans against the wall. "Which means your family is probably looking for you, and if they're western, the Lady Arania can't just keep you here." He thinks. "Well, I guess she could. She is quite willful. I met her a few times."

Her eyes brightened. "Is she? I have never met her. But perhaps she would agree to pretend I'm one of the hostages. And well, if I were here as myself, my family need not worry about me any more. Even my lady mother could hardly object." Though she'd have to think of a convincing lie to explain the time she'd spent with Quentyn.
She thought for a moment. "I don't want to burden you more than I must, Olyvar. I'll tell you my true name, if you wish, but first I must speak to Lady Arania and the female novices."

"Go for it," Olyvar said. "Put in a good word for me to one who doesn't want to be a novice, please."

"I will," she said. "I think I had better find Lady Arania first, though, in case one of the girls from home recognises me. I was known at Lannisport. Will you give me the benefit of your name for just a little while, Olyvar? A member of House Manderly cannot be ignored and I dare not tell my true name to Lady Arania's guards until I have spoken to the lady herself."

Olyvar shrugs. "I'll come with you. But you owe me."

"I'll remember, she vowed. "If all goes well, I'm sure that you will find our acquaintance of mutual benefit."
They were approaching the Citadel gates now. She smiled at Olvyar and said "Let's go to the Hightower before I lose my nerve."

Arriving back at the Citadel, Morgan said to Olyvar. "I wonder who will know where the new female students have been given quarters. I assume that the bunks we stayed in while we were waiting for admission weren't intended to be our permanent accommodation? But I don't yet know where the novices usually live."

"I think they're at some dead lesser noble's house," he said. "We ccan ask around."

"Of course. Now I wish I had prevailed upon my father to let me visit Oldtown years ago, I might actually be familiar with the city's layout. But no matter, we shall contrive. Perhaps you'll even be blessed with the first sight of your future wife." She smiled hopefully. "Perhaps one of the maesters will be forthcoming. Hmm, or a servant perhaps. Everyone knows servants gossip, no matter where they serve."

Olyvar nods. "Fortunately, my brother quite likes me, so he does give me an allowance a bit more commensurate with my former station than most." They walk out. "It's a shame, by the way, that you want to be a maester or maestress....or whatever they'll be clled. You're really pretty," he said.
