"No, fool," he said. "Why we sacrifice to become maesters." He smiled. "We rule Westeros."

"Because you know more than everyone else? And that's why you don't let women in? So there are fewer people who know your secrets?"

The man smiles. "No, Morgan Brax. Not at all." He rubs her head. "Women were sent to be birthers and mothers. Men rule the world, Morgan. It's like giving a fish wings."

She moved her head away from him. "I am not made to be a mother. I don't even want to rule anything, I just want to study."
Her back throbbed. She felt tired, even though she'd not long woken up. "Do you have milk of the poppy? I'd like to sleep, if you won't tell me what's going to happen to me now>"

"You have twenty six more days in here," he said. "Every day your only contact is with me." he promised. "You will learn the right way of things." He offers her a small cup of poppy's milk.

She took the cup but did not drink yet. "I can't stay here for twenty six days," she said. "I will lose my mind. I did nothing wrong, truly. Please, you have to help me."

"You can confess," the man said soothingly. "With confession comes penitence," he said. "I can only help you if you help yourself. Tell me the story, again. From your time of perversion in Riverrun."

"I don't want to talk about it. I just want to sleep," she said. "I'm not going to confess to crimes I didn't commit." And she knew she had to be very careful. "But whose authority holds me here? Either I am a novice and subject to the laws of the Citadel, or I am not a novice and must be allowed to go free. The Citadel has no right to keep me here if it does not wish to keep me as a novice."

"Did I not say we rule Westeros?" the man says condescendingly. "We slew the dragons, we make kings and break them." He strokes her chin and his arm trails down her chest. "If we hold you here until you shrivel and die, no one would say anything, or else they'd lose their maester, and no lord can rule without his maester."

She pulled away from him. She didn't want to be touched right now. "But even the order of maesters has laws which must be followed, that much is clear. I just want to know what the purpose is in holding me here for so long. I am sure your time could be better spent elsewhere."

"You broke our laws," he said. "We have a job for you as...a chance to redeem yourself."

"A...job?" She asked. "How do you mean?" She was convinced that she didn't even need redemption since the only true crime she had committed had been for a good reason and harmed nobody, but now she was curious.

"Yes," he said, following her, petting her like you would a dog or a cat, "the new women coming for the Lady Arania's sick little joke." He smiles down at her. "You will help us ruin them."

She looked up at him, hoping he didn't mean what she thought he meant. "Ruin them? But how?"

"Be our little spy," he said. "No one would suspect the poor whipped girl. Then do what we tell you," he rose. "Think on it tonight, in the cold and damp and through your cold bath the servants will give you. It can all be over."
