"And you are unwed, yes?" The men asked.

"Yes. I was betrothed, once, but the man I was to marry fell in love with another. Please, all I want is to study."

"Then we shall test your maidenhead," the judge says. "It shall prove the truth of your words." The men mumble agreement.

Morgan gasped and paled. Even if it weren't for the fact that she'd already lost her maidenhead, the thought of these old men touching her filled her with horror.
"No. I will not submit to such treatment. And it's no good, anyway. It will prove nothing." She looked around at them all, desperately. "I am unmarried, but I am not a maiden. There was a man, an Ironborn captain. He took me prisoner and claimed my maidenhead for his own."

"An Ironborn captain? So you were captured, then raped, then released, then you disguised yourself as a boy rather than return to your family to recover?" A man chuckles.
"Wish all the raped girls did that. Make the law much less difficult to avoid."

"I was nowhere near to home," she said. "And there was war, of course. How could I get home? And I'd always dreamed of the Citadel. Is it so hard to believe that a woman would risk all to achieve her dream? Men do it all the time. They risk their lives in battle because they dream of becoming famous or wealthy. Women have ambitions too."

"That sounded like a guilty plea," the judge said. "Do you have any witnesses to offer in your defense?"

"Olyvar Manderly," she said. "He and I were in the same quarters, he knows I did nothing improper during my stay in Oldtown. You could ask for Sara Banwfort to come from the women's quarters too. She'll speak for me, I know."

"Sara Banefort just arrived. If you call one roommate, you have to call them all," the man said. "Otherwise you'd call in the one you lay with. Plead guilty and we shall be easy on you."

She looked at the man with an anxious expression on her face. "I lay with none of them and I did not offer them temptation in any way. I cannot and will not plead guilty to that."

Four young men enter. They look sleep deprived. The judge points to them. "Did you lay with this woman, Novice Alvin?" The tall man looks at her through bleary eyes and nods.
"Aye, maester." he says, bowing his head. They continue through the other three. All agree to her fornications. The judge looks to her. He is an ugly and scary looking man, short and stocky with a thick grey beard.
"You four are on latrine duty for the year, and shall each take a half dozen lashes." They open their eyes in panic and protest as they are ushered out.

"They lie, all of them," Morgan insisted. "I don't know why they would do this to me. I did nothing to any of them. Please, my lords, you have to believe me." Her eyes watered with unshed tears. She blinked. "All I want, truly, is to study here."

Some of the men seem moved, but the judge waves them away. "This is why women cannot be allowed here, my fellows; see how she hides her guilt through glassy tears and nonsense. She admitted to lying not ten minutes ago." He bangs the gavel. "Seven days isolation for every boy you lay with, and their lashes as well. In light of your....anatomy, you shall only suffer the half dozen granted your bedmates."
Guards strip her shirt off and hold her arms out. A rope is placed in her mouth and a huge man with a scourge comes out.

Morgan began trying to kick and struggle in panic. She couldn't believe it had come to this and most particularly when she was innocent of the crime they accused her of. Nobody had ever laid a hand on her since she was a little girl and she was shaking with fear. Tears welled up in her eyes.

She is pushed down and the lashes begin. The first is blinding pain, and a man holds the rope in to stop her from biting her tongue off. They leave a few seconds between each one, so the pain never has a chance to lose intensity. On the sixth she loses consciousness.
//
She wakes up in a cell, dreamwine clouding her mind. Her clothes have been replaced with a simple cloth shift, and she has a mattress and a pillow and a bucket for company, along with a bit of water and bread.
