Character's Personal History: Some men say that Ulfric Ninefingers sprang forth from the sea rather than his mother's womb, already armed and armoured and screaming obscenities. At the age of ten, when most boys in Westeros become squire to this knight or that lord, Ulfric was made an oarsman on the Salt Wife's Bane, a longship belonging to his father's brother, Ingmar Harlaw. He slew his first man at eleven, on the topdeck of a merchant schooner sailing out of the Arbor, and at fourteen he claimed his first Salt Wife. The woman was a Lyseni whore who had been purchased by the Lord of Oldtown and was being transported there from her native Lys when the Ironborn took her ship, and Ulfric killed two other Ironborn who attempted to claim her for themselves, before the rest of the crew acknowledged his ownership of the girl. Though he has taken two other salt wives since, "The Lyseni" as she is often called at Ten Towers remains his favorite wife, and her children are favored above those birthed by the rest of his wives.
In 360, he commissioned a his own longship, having finally amassed enough coin to pay for it. He paid the Iron Price for every ingot of gold, every gemstone, every coin used to pay for the vessel, which he dubbed "Reaper's Fury" as it finally slid out of the drydock into the sea. The shipyards of Lordsport worked for months on what is agreed by many to be the fastest and sleekest longship built in a decade at least, and in the twenty years since it was built, the Fury's black-and-silver sails are a dreaded sight up and down every coastline that touches the Sunset Sea. There is not a ship with sails that can outrun the Reaper's Fury, and her oarsmen are unmatched though whether they are driven by desire to do their job well, or by fear of their master, is not known.
Ulfric is a pious son of the Drowned God, being twice-drowned himself and twice resuscitated by the Drowned God's Priests. He is known to observe the Old Way fervently, offering up those slain by his hand to the Drowned God. He carries at his side a skin of sea-water at all times when he is not at sea.
Character's Reputation: A raping, reaving Ironman if there ever was one. Ulfric is extremely well known among the Iron Island for his skills in Fingerdancing; he was involved in the longest contest in recent memory when he faced the legendary Quellon Wyk at a feast on Pyke in 359. The pair danced for nine hours, each suffering a dozen cuts but losing no fingers until the very last throw. They threw simultaneously, and with such force that each caught the other's axe, but Wyk lost three fingers off his left hand while Ulfric only his left pinky. He was declared the winner, and has since been called 'Ninefingers' by many on the Islands.
His personal standard is the Scythe of his father's banner, silver on black, but gripped by two hands, one of which is missing its smallest finger.
Character's Physical Description: Tall, swarthy, swaggering. Stubbly and muscled with a long scar stretching across his left cheek, from the bone down toward his neck. His hair is usually worn cut short, but has begun to grow shaggy for a lack of shearing. He is not classically handsome, but neither is he unpleasant to look at, and his sheer badassery does tend to attract women.
Character's Lineage: Ulfric Harlaw is the son of Lord Theon Harlaw of Ten Towers, born three hundred and forty-three years after Aegon the Conqueror first arrived in Westeros. His mother was Lady Maelara Lannister, a daughter of King Domeric of the Goldlands who was carried off by the Ironborn during the Culling of Lannisport in 342. She bore Theon two other sons besides Ulfric, though one of them died as a boy, and the other was killed when his ship went down in a storm, during the winter of 369.
