Janelle nodded. "An odd notion, but well-intentioned at least." She sighs and swirls her drink. "I am glad that he married you, at least; you seem to have a more pragmatic approach that will be rather important in the days to come. And sometimes a lesser evil is the best one can ask for, when it comes to Malik Greyjoy or some magical queen, I'd rather my son ensured the first was dealt with. Those Ironborn are beasts who wear human disguises."

"I couldn't agree more," Joanna replied. "I don't believe peace with them was ever really an option. Your husband was quite right in calling them vermin. The safest thing for everyone would be to have them eradicated." She paused for a moment, wondering if what she'd just said had been too mean. She decided it had not. "I think Benjen is a bit of a dreamer, but the reality is slowly beating those idealistic notions out of him. Just like what being captured in that cold damp cell did to me."
She smiled suddenly. "But we did not come here to discuss the cruelties and casualties of war, now did we?"

Janelle thinks on her last point a moment. "Well, don't let the cold reality of the worst times in life blind you to its high points, Joanna. I am sure you don't need the reminder but a mother sometimes just cannot help herself. Even a mere mother in law." She picks at some finger foods. "I do hope you two get along. I know it's not a...political necessity, but life is so much better when one has a real partner."

"I am sure we will, in time," Joanna said. Benjen was too stubborn to be subdued easily, but in time, she was quite confident it would happen. "Did you get along splendidly with your husband, from the start?" she wondered.

"Oh no," she said. "Terrence was rather more...active back then. He still had his sword arm helthy and hale when we were wed, and we were only sixteen, mind you. He had many mistakes to make before we got along like we do now." She shrugs. "But the mistakes of youth prevent follies in adulthood."

Like father, like son, she thought and drained her second glass of wine. "I suppose I am too old already for mistakes of the youth and it seems Benjen has made his already," she said with a half-smile. "I think it is getting late, my queen. We ought to be heading back to the keep."

"Yes, you're right," she said. "It's been an enlightening afternoon, my dear."
