Somehow Joanna's room in the Rock is even more extravagant than her room in Lannisport.

Several days after King Brynden leaves, a servant enters the lady's room uninvited. Aleister is one of her more noted whisperers, and he bows. "My lady, pardon the intrusion, but this cannot wait. You know our army was defeated at Acorn Hall, but Harrys Snow, possibly with the Faith's help, have attacked Eddard's Rest." He paused for breath, and maybe effect. "The prince's daughter and wife are slain, among hundreds of others. King Terrence is comatose, possibly deead by now, and the prince is in charge now." Aleister pauses. "They will blame us, I think."

Joanna let the man speak without being interrupted, and then had to take a moment for the information to sink in. Her father must have been ecstatic. For her, it meant her imminent nuptials were even.. more imminent, and her timeframe smaller. "I thought the Faith disbanded," she finally said. "Is there any news of further movements? Are they going to retaliate?"

"They have rearmed and reformed, my lady, and tens of thousands are gathering in the east of the Reach. The North repelled the attack in the end. We are waiting on their next move." He frowned. "Winter is on the verge of appearing, and Lord Kalvin will not hae to guard his long shores much longer. He will be coming south, and stories of his anger are not appealing to my ears."

"Nor to mine," Joanna agreed. This whole war was a folly, and going because of something she never wanted to participate in the first place was unacceptable, even if it was her own father's doing. "This probably means my father will be moving soon. What of the Stark? Benjen, was it? You think he will blame us for Eddard's Rest?" she inquired.

"I do not know the prince, my lady, but if nothing else we forced him to leave his family unguarded. Even so...I would rather deal with the prince than the lord. He has the bigger army." He stops. "Also, I think the northmen are seeking out Nicholas Snow."

Joanna frowned. They had no right to. "Do you know why?" she asked, and fell silent for a while. "Perhaps he will not have to be dealt with at all. It might be a long shot, but can you get a letter into Eddard's Rest without interference?"

"To who, my lady? It is possible. Truth be told, spies like us have certain professional courtesies we stick to, else we'd all be dead soon enough." Aleister thinks. "I believe I can get a letter to Lord Leon Frey, the King's own Hand, if the task is urgent enough, but that would call in a lot of favors."

The maid returns late that night. "My lady, the Tyrells are here to discuss joining the war effort. Their lord seeks a bride worthy of himself, or so they say. I don't know if he'll fight without one."

"It is of utmost importance. I would not put anyone's life on the line if it was not," she said. "Especially people I value as highly; the work you do is admirable. I will make it worthwhile, of course. Call all the favours you must. Leon Frey should suffice, I believe. You may return later this evening for the letter."

"Ah," she replied, quite satisfied with how that had played out. "What was the princess's response?"

Aleister nods and departs.

The maid answers carefully. Lord Tyrell is not popular, but he is at least in Westeros. I believe the Princess Kelsey would approve, but the Volantenes are too critical to our war to anger. I think, my lady."

"Very well," she nodded. "Was there anything else?"

"No, my lady. Thank you for the ring." the maid leaves quietly.

Joanna had the nagging feeling that she would be accused of stealing it from one of the princesses, were she to flaunt it around. "Could you also let Princess Kelsey know I would like to have a word with her in the morning, before I leave?"

"Of course, my lady," she said, curtsying as she left.
