Arania couldn't help but sympathize with the girl. The Sealord had threatened to do the same to her. "I'll try," she said, not looking at the girl, but at Lord Drumm.

Ragnar backhanded the girl across the face.
"I told you to be QUIET!" He shouted.
He then turned to Arania.
"Why should it wait, my lady? If I cannot interrogate her, I will learn nothing new."

Arania stood up straighter. "I never said not to question her, I merely asked you to postpone it. And perhaps it could be carried out in a manner not so violent. She's been through a lot, it seems. Is it really necessary to torment her further?"

"She'll tell me more if she is frightened of me," Ragnar said. "And why should I postpone it? What good does that do?"

"Not everyone here is Ironborn. Some are offended by such things. Myself included. I would very much appreciate if you would save it." Arania bit her lip, trying not to look at the girl. She figured it would be impossible to stop him from doing as he wanted, and that he would be twice as likely to fuck the girl silly then and there just because Arania had asked him not to. Wasn't that the Ironborn way?

Ragnar continued to hold the girl's wrist a little too hard as he looked seriously at Arania.
"Do you think my people have prospered from caring what greenlanders think, girl? Why should I care that you are offended by my customs? You offer me no incentive to wait."

She looked at him coldly. "Perhaps you should wait to offend the 'greenlanders' until we are all back on our own land. It would hardly do to have us all at eachothers throats when we are in foreign territory, where men are out for Westerosi blood."

80 + 78=158 (+1 Diplomacy!) Opposed: 128 (Medium)
Arania has a legitimate point.

Ragnar sighed.
"I suppose that's true, but I cannot see why you care about some foreign bitch who tried to kill me, Sorcery or no sorcery, she has to be punished."

"I can sympathize with her," she said quietly. "I know you want revenge, but it seems she was just a pawn under the sway of Harrys Snow. It was simply her bad luck to be inthis position." Arania knew a thing or two about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"You think that, do you? I'm not so sure. Besides, I need a new salt wife. I'll look a fool if I don't have a few salt wives, and this girl is handy. Stark actually suggested we kill them at first."

Arania knew only a little of the customs of the Iron Islands, but she did know that the life of a salt wife was difficult and little better than a whore. She put a hand on her hip haughtily. "He was right. If you areso worried about her actions being her own and not just the sorcerers influence, you should killher and not keep her in your bed. Or else send her home, and use the ransom to buy a hundred Lysene pleasure slaves, or whatever it is you prefer."

"You don't understand," he said. "I don't object to taking a ransom but if I then used that to buy slaves, I'd be paying the gold price. My people prefer to pay the iron price. Do you know what that is?"

She had a pretty good idea of what it was. "Yes, I know, but..." She frowned. She couldn't fight this uphill battle against the entire foundation of Lord Drumm's culture, but she was too prideful to back down. "Steal the slaves, then, but those are women who were bred for such things. They expect it. This girl and her sister should be sent home. Or kill them. But they don't deserve to suffer further indignities."

"My salt wives are treated a damn sight better than most salt wives," he said calmly. "You think her father will want her back now Snow has dishonoured her? I doubt it. He'd likely sell her off to some old man or lock her behind some temple's walls. No woman deserves that."
He paused to grin at her.
"Not even you, sweetling."
