He laughed. "Like you could buy that with gold or jewels. Seriously...he KILLED the FACELESS MEN. How long would you try dodging his questions? I mean, I'm hardly going to run down the street screaming I sold him out...but if I speak quickly enough, maybe he'll just kill me, not use me for one of his wizards' experiments."

Arania scowled. "I'm sure he's busy at the moment, killing virgins and causing havoc and whatever else it is he does across the Narrow Sea. I think I'm more likely to run into him myself than for him to come knocking on your door." She almost got up and left, but she found her curiosity piqued again. "What wizards, though?"

"His little group of sorcerers. Gods know where he found them. I heard two of them died in Westeros not too long ago. One fled east somewhere, and Vhagus, well...he was a whole different case." The small man shivers. "But the scariest by far was the ole Westerosi."

"Vhagus?" She sat forward in her chair. "Vhagus Blackfyre was a protege of Cassadar's?" Her mind raced. No wonder Amelia had been loath to speak of her time in the Dothraki Sea. No wonder he had so easily killed all of the Khals and gained control of the black dragon. "Could you tell me of each of them?"

"For a necklace? Of course not. Vhagus, though, he was more a peer of Cassadar's. They all learned together. Under Harrys Snow." The man coughs. "The wizards are quite the diverse bunch, I can tell you that.

"Under Harrys Snow?" The color drained from her face. "Is there anything else you can tell me? If not, I believe I should be going now."

"Plenty more, just not for the necklace." He shrugs. "So it's your choice."

As much as she wanted to bolt, and run as fast as she could to deliver her new-found information to Kalvin and Lord Drumm, she knew she should try to get as much as she could. She was treading deep water now, why not go in as far as she could go? "It will look strange to leave with so much less jewelry than I entered with," she observed, removing the jewelled comb from her hair and holding it out as an offering.

"Many people do. It is easy to fall into the debt of the Iron Bank. Some even leave naked, if their clothes are valuable enough, or they have owed too much." He shrugs. "The owners are ruthless." He examines the comb. "Not the necklace, but it buys two more questions I suppose."

She frowned. "Oh. So it will be thought that I paid my debts..." Two questions, and she had to make them count. "Harrys Snow...tell me about his wizardry. What could one expect, going up against him?"

"Hells, I don't know. He's strong but getting older...maybe it'll affect his abilities. I've heard he tried to raise the dead once, but I doubt that's true. His specialty was manipulation. Making friends enemies, no lady could stop his advances, that sort of thing." He frowns. "Even you'd wake up next to him, I'm sure."

She bit her lip and crossed her legs delicately. "Perhaps, but the matter of whose bed I find myself in is neither here nor there." She looked down at her hands, pondering her next question. "Let me think a moment. I don't want to waste a question now."

"Of course. All the time you need." He says, smiling. "So much knowledge, so little money."

She thought of how mousy he had seemed when she first met him, this banker fellow. He had turned out to be quite a rat, though, smiling so smugly at her, and holding her Volantene jewels in his greedy little hands. She didn't begrudge him the jewels, of course not, and she understood the risks they both were taking in this exchange of information. Still, the look on his face was not one she liked. At long last, she managed to speak.
"Do you know of a weakness? Anything...what can be done against the sorcery of Cassadar and Harrys Snow?"

"If I knew of a sure one, they wouldn't be half so dangerous, I don't think. From what I've heard, though, the only real counter is to find another sorcerer, or kill them before they can bring it to bear. It's not an instantaneous process, by any means." He pockets the jewelry.
