The men spread out and stay in easy peripheral vision of each other, moving as a unit, albeit one hastily formed. They see the village sept has smoke coming through the chimney. The other houses are all eerie still.

This was wrong. Even after dark as it was, there should be signs of life here. Dogs, a few homes with light from the hearth through the windows, smoke in chimneys. Oberyn frowned, sniffing the air. He cautiously tried the door of the first house on his left.

The door is shut but doesn't seem locked.

Gerold advances as quiet and stealthy as possible in full plate armor. His round shield is held tight to his body while his spear is at the ready. A longsword sits in a scabbard attached on his waist should he need it.
Gerold could not help but feel they were walking into an ambush yet he did his duty. He remained vigilant looking for any clue as to the whereabouts of the outlaws or anything that would explain the reason for the village seeming deserted.
((OOC-I don't want to overburden you with Observation checks so if you want me to wait 'til Oberyn finishes doing whatever he is going to do with the house. If not then Observation 65.))

Gerold smells the faint yet familiar smell of sulfur in the air.

"Sulfur." Gerold said aloud for those in the group closest to him to hear. They could pass it along to the others though he was probably not the only one to smell it.

Based on Ser Markus's surprised look, he may well have been, but once alerted to it it is unmistakeable.

Oberyn kicks in the door, with enough force to send it flying around on its hinges and slamming into the wall. He does not immediately advance into the room, but looks forward cautiously. He shortens his grip on his spear, to allow for better maneuverability in closed quarters, and stalks forward into the darkened interior, with a motion for two men to follow.

Inside, they see a dead man and what are probably his two children. All three corpses have a different verse from the Seven-Pointed Star cut unto them. One of Yronwood's men makes a gagging sound.

Oberyn tastes bile, and fights it down. He'd seen worse done on the field of battle, but not by much. Covering his nose and mouth with one gauntleted hand, he leaned forward to see if he recognized the verses, carved in red onto the children's corpses.

They involve some supposedly allegorical images from the days when the seven are supposed to return to Westeros, walking among mortals as kings over kings.

Oberyn frowns, but eventually leaves the building. They would have to give the victims a proper burial, of course, but that would have to wait until they were sure the town did not contain the Lordsbane, or whatever madman had done this.
Leaving the house, Lord Yronwood seeks out Ser Ghaston, to quietly inform the man of what he had seen. Naming the verses, he relayed to the Knight-Commander their content as well, his frown deepening as he did so. It offended him, that the names of the Seven could be invoked over crimes such as these.

Ghaston gritted his teeth as the news was relayed to him. The Seven's name should not be profaned in such a way. Even ignoring the blasphemy, it would do little to win the lost populace back to the true faith.
His eyes, set with a cold fury, locked on the sept in the center of the village. He drew his longsword, the crystal pommel shining in the moonlight, and strode towards the sept with Ser Myles and Silar at either side. He tried the large oaken doors.

As he approaches fires starting lighting all the houses, starting right at the tops of the roof. the thatched roofs go up swiftly and create a thick black smoke. The thick oaken doors are unlocked and could be opened with a powerful thrust by two or three men.

Ghaston could feel the sweat building as fires sprang up around him, soaking the hair shirt under his silver armor, but his attention was on the sept. He nodded to the Warrior's Son on either side of him and the three kicked the door in unison, plate boots slamming against the oak doors.
